Introduction

I was fortunate enough to arrive in Burgundy for the end of the weeklong Musique & Vin. My friends and I were invited by Bernard Hervet to be his guests at the Friday afternoon tasting and evening concert, which was followed by dinner and a "Paulee" celebration. Many great young wines were served at the late afternoon tasting, then even more at the dinner and Paulee. Alas, I lost my notebook with my tasting notes, so here are the few I distinctly recalled several days later when I discovered the notebook's loss. These were mostly the wines at our table at dinner.

Flight 1 - La Paulee (8 Notes)

  • 2009 Faiveley Meursault 1er Cru Blagny 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Fat orchard fruit aromas with some clear toasty oak spice. Lush and forward ripe apple flavors and some peach hints. Good for now, slightly simple.

  • 2009 Faiveley Corton-Charlemagne 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

From magnum. Very impressive overall. Lots of ripe apple with some peach hints and enticing, exotic Asian spice. Power comes through immediately on palate with density and concentration. Still way too young, this has great pop at the end with lots of acidity, minerality and great texture.

  • 1997 Domaine & Selection Meursault Coche-Dury 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Ripe fruit aromas, showing apple and peach with some tropical notes, but lots of freshness. Slightly more restrained on palate with good energy and textures. If served blind, never would have thought 1997.

  • 1988 Domaine Trapet Chapelle-Chambertin Reserve Jean Trapet 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Dense and backward black fruit aromas. Identical on palate with background spice hint. Clearly lots of quality here, just not really forthcoming. Just given a little time open before serving...not nearly enough. I have never even seen this cuvee before from any vintage, but I would give this more cellar or air time if I owned a bottle and intended to open it any time soon.

  • 1997 Louis Jadot Chapelle-Chambertin 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chapelle-Chambertin Grand Cru

Cross-section of cherry aromas with just a hint of earthy evolution to come. Meaty, dense black fruit flavors with a trace of sauvage. Powerful and concentrated finish.

  • 2000 Domaine Dujac Echezeaux 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Echezeaux Grand Cru

From magnum. alluring aromatic start of mature red fruit, floral and perfumed elements and lots of dried spice and herbs. Elegant and accessible flavors with everything in great balance. This really showed the structure and fruit to keep getting better going forward. An impressive 2000. Thanks, Jeff.

  • 2000 Domaine Anne Gros Clos Vougeot Le Grand Maupertui 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Attractive aromatic start with slightly mature red fruit, good Asian spice and floral hints. Red fruit flavors are evolving and take on some complexity. Spice still seemed ever-so-slightly oak driven, but overall lovely and most likely at its peak today.

  • 1983 Domaine Michel Gaunoux Pommard 1er Cru Rugiens-Bas

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Very characteristic of the problems with some 1983s, showing a less-than-pristine character if triage wasn't done well.

Flight 2 - Post Paulee (3 Notes)

For scientific purposes only we decided to compare the Mugneret-Gibourg "young vines" Ruchottes-Chambertin that have been excluded from the Ruchottes-Chambertin bottling for their first several harvests. Starting in 2012 these vines' output will be included in the Grand Cru bottling. I'm not certain why the Mortet was included in the flight, but it was late and I wasn't asking questions, just enjoying myself in the l'Hotel lobby with a few new and old friends.

  • 2005 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Gevrey-Chambertin 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin

Lots of robust berry flavors and aromas, alongside subtle spice, less intensively classically Vosne to me tonight. Also showing lots of acidity and tannic structure, this is an interesting wine with great components, just still not completely integrated yet. Given its source (100% young vines Ruchottes I believe), I think this has upside from here but I am not 100% confident.

  • 2011 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Stunning aromatic start with slightly exotic baking spice and huge red fruit. This really shows its Grand Cru character (100% young vines Ruchottes) with lots of power plus finesse on palate as well. Completely charming and alluring today, this will shut down at some point soon, but the amazing substance and textures will make this a sensational wine as it matures 2020 forward.

  • 2010 Domaine Denis Mortet Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Aux Beaux Bruns 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Bottle opened two days earlier, with cork then reinserted. Bright red fruit with great aromatic concentration. Lush and dense on palate with some vanilla and cocoa background notes. A bit straightforward right now. Really well textured, this will certainly evolve into something more intriguingly finessed.
