Introduction

The theme was worldwide chards and pinots. But it turned out to basically be white and Red Burgs. It was also an opportunity to meet Mike Zimberg and welcome him into the group.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2004 Louis Jadot Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

Medium dark gold color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 45 minutes. This has nice nutty, butterscotch quality on the nose along with earth and citrus. The palate grows and takes on some weight, with citrus, apple, toast, and saline infused minerality and finish.

  • 2009 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

light gold color. Followed 2 glasses over 3 hours. This really was singing right off the bat. Nose is full of sea shells, oyster, ocean breeze, citrus, earth, apple. The palate has fantastic purity, wonderful minerality, citrus, fresh and crisp, with a long finish. This can only get better, but man is it delicious now. Group and my white WOTN.

  • 2006 Louis Latour Corton-Charlemagne 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Medium gold color. PNP, followed 2 glasses over 3 hours. Loved the nose, very complex, toasted, lemon zest, citrus, honey, tangerine, floral, mineral. The palate is round and full bodied, but not heavy, citrus, orange blossom, toast, honey, medium plus finish. This was a bit better on the first go round and was not quite as vibrant with the second pass. 93 initially and 92 later. 92+pt overall.

  • 2008 Varner Chardonnay Spring Ridge Vineyard Bee Block 93 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Light gold color. Followed 2 glasses over 3 hours. Nose has florals, ripe, mildly tropical compared to the last bottle, pear, pineapple, citrus, white flowers, mild oak. The palate is bigger, ripe fruits, pineapple, apple, citrus, mineral, a little butter, round with a long finish. Not quite as intense and long as the last bottle.

Flight 2 (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Peay Vineyards Pinot Noir Scallop Shelf Estate 94 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Medium garnet color. PNP. Drank 2 glasses over 2 hours. This was a real hedonistic treat. I thoroughly enjoyed this wine. Amazing purity and elegance wrapped up in a perfectly balanced package. This built steadily through the night from a rock solid 92+ to what was for me a bonafide 94pt wine. Lovely fruits here, raspberry, pomegranate, cherries, fresh, subtle earth, and spice. Very bright and energetic, with a long finish. This was my and group red WOTN.

  • 2005 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Dark red color. PNP, followed 2 glasses over 2+ hours. Mineral driven with prominent iodine, iron, earth, blood meal, developing a fine floral quality on the second round, darker cherry. The palate is big, fairly full bodied, round, firm but round tannins, dark berry, cranberry, mineral, hints of a savoriness and a medium finish. Drinking quite young still.

  • 2009 Bouchard Père et Fils Volnay 1er Cru Caillerets Ancienne Cuvée Carnot 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Light-medium red color. 3hr decant. Followed 2 glasses over 2+ hours. The nose has some nice floral qualities, cherry, earthy. The palate is a bit on the dry, tannic side, cherry, dark berry, spicy with distinct minerality. Interestingly, in reading back to notes from RJ 2 years ago, none of us found this be stemmy or green. Presumably this has benefited from some time in bottle.

  • 2005 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

DArk red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. This impressive stuff, great nose with funk, horse barn, leather, sandalwood, berry, a bit medicinal. The palate carries tart fruit, berry, sour cherry, earth, funk, and lingering finish. Deliciousl - thanks Mike. This ended up being my second favorite of the reds. 93+pts.

  • 2003 Château Tirecul La Gravière Monbazillac 93 Points

    France, Southwest France, Dordogne, Monbazillac

Deep gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. This was a little warmer than intended at 62 degrees and I think it was muted a bit. Still pretty impressive stuff and we'll see what happens on day 2 at a better temperature. Really nice nose with orange peel, citrus, melon, orange blossom, spice. The palate has a botrytis laden crème brule character with toasted nuts, citrus, honey, and a long finish. 93+pts.
