Introduction

Andrew ran this event, his first time organizing a tasting and really did a nice job. He reached out to Samantha from Poe Wines, who graciously agreed to participate and Steve worked with The Montage chef on the menu. A perfect team.

Sam is soft spoken, quick with a smile, and extremely passionate about Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Throughout the evening she shared her thoughts on vineyards, styles and the wine making techniques she uses. Maybe more importantly, why she chose those versus others. Really fascinating and educational. Below is a quote from the Poe Wine website in Samantha's own words. http://www.poewines.com/

POE was founded in 2009 by Samantha Sheehan, an advocate of the vineyards and wines of Burgundy and Champagne. The brand; Poe, was created to show that California too has incredible and distinctive terroir, varying dramatically from one microclimate to the next. Poe only produces single vineyard wines to show that distinction, and picks not by numbers, but rather when the fruit is balanced and flavorful.

An interesting observation and discussion between FMIII and myself ensued after the 4th flight where it became obvious that each of the Poe wines were distinguishable from each other. How often have you tasted a lineup and it's difficult, if not impossible, to distinguish between vineyard and AVA wines from various vintages? Not the case here, each wine carries it's unique character into the next vintage. Another theme throughout this tasting story is the amazingly high quality across the line up. That's a real talent.

It takes a village of stems to pull this off and Gary the Sommelier from the Montage did an incredible job.

Flight 1 - Rose with an appetizer (1 Note)

Scallops with fennel

The Chardonnay and Rose on ice. There had been more bottles before I took this picture, but Steve and I weren't paying attention and started tasting the rosé not knowing it was for the first flight, not the appetizer. Soon we were pouring for everybody in complete oblivion. Ugh! But our act of heresy didn't phase Samantha one bit as she just said "OK, we'll just move this wine here and that one there. All good." Travesty averted.

  • 2013 Poe Wines Rosé Sonoma County

    USA, California, Sonoma County

Bottled 3 days earlier. No malo for this rose and clocked in at 11.5%. In fact, this wine hasn't seen air and was bottled with co2 gas which results in a very pink color. Aromas of tree fruit, pear, and strawberry. Very light mouthfeel with medium acidity. Terrific and will make a fine pairing with seafood in the summer.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

Littleneck clam cake, smoked bacon aioli, meyer lemon

  • 2013 Poe Wines Pinot Noir Pinot Nouveau

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

This is very interesting and a very limited bottling. The wine didn't go through normal fermentation with yeast, the uncrushed whole clusters were placed in a tank and sealed from oxygen for 7 weeks. The enzymes inside the grapes create carbonic fermentation. Slightly cloudy maroon color, guessing not filtered. Nose is sweet mashed strawberries. Palate is very smooth, very little tannins resulting a soft feel. Flavors are red cherry and strawberry with stem notes. Great, fun, early
    drinker.

  • 2012 Poe Wines Chardonnay Ferrington Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Wasn't a fan of the '11 as it was a much bigger fruit forward and heavy wine. Wow, is this year impressive! As FMIII notes, there were some cooperage changes and they definitely have an extremely positive effect. Chris S is my Chardonnay guru and when I saw him asking for the bottle I knew he liked it as much as I did. I think everyone liked this wine. Nose of apple and nectarine. Medium plus acid drives this wine. Fruit flavors are ripe pear and yellow apple. Medium length finish and very clean. Bam!

  • 2010 Poe Wines Pinot Noir Angel Camp Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Previously tasted 18 months earlier in a blind event and really liked it. It's getting better. The nose is the bomb, beautiful black fruit. Palate shows ripe red berry and medium toast. Finishes with a bit of acid and sandalwood.

  • 2011 Poe Wines Pinot Noir Angel Camp Vineyard

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

I like the '10 it's great, but this is even better in my opinion. Seems like it was picked at a lower brix resulting is a less fruit forward profile. This is killer. Nose has a Pinot funk which I like, some discussion whether this was reduction but not the case. There is light cherry flavor and significantly noticeable chalky mineral note. Yeah. Medium plus length on the finish.

Flight 4 (4 Notes)

House Made Tagliatele Pork Bolognese, San marzano tomatoes, torn basil

  • 2013 Poe Wines Pinot Noir Manchester Ridge Vineyard

    USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino

Barrel sample. Seems lighter in color than the '12. Dusty stem nose, very entertaining. Palate is stem notes, bark, dark cherry, and earth. Medium plus finish / medium plus acid and with bit of ash. Who knows what this will grow up into, but if the complexity at this stage is any indication then this wine will be a superstar.

  • 2012 Poe Wines Pinot Noir Manchester Ridge Vineyard

    USA, California, North Coast, Mendocino

This is a big boy. All the components are in ample supply. It's dark colored, sweet cherry/red fruit and tons of acid for a Pinot Noir. This vineyard just clicks out the acid which is great and promises age worthiness. All this and it has a silky mouthfeel and a medium plus length finish.

  • 2012 Poe Wines Pinot Noir Hudson Vineyards

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

The wine looks ruby colored. It smells like blackberry and cherry. It tastes like strawberry and cherry. The body is medium. The wine has angular texture. The wine finishes medium. The wine has medium acidity.

Barrel sample. Really, this will be better than the '12? What a nice problem. Great structure with lots of spice and dark fruit wrapped in an acid blanket. Now go back to sleep and get your rest my little baby. Shhh....

  • 2013 Poe Wines Pinot Noir La Tache clone Van der Kamp Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain

Barrel sample. If you're making wine from La Tache cuttings then why not inoculate with yeast from DRC? That's exactly was Poe did, what a cool idea. Light stem note aromas and flavors. Rhubarb and cherry flavors. Any time there's rhubarb you'll get my attention. Medium toast. Delicious.

  • 2013 Poe Wines Pinot Noir Old Vine Van der Kamp Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Mountain

Barrel sample. Burg, burg burg, burg, burg, burg. There is NO WAY a burg head would call this anything but burgundy tasting it blind. Really special and just a barrel sample at this point. It's smooth, spicy, cherry and raspberry and stemmy goodness.

Closing

Steve surprised Sam by ordering three desserts, just for her. It was quite fun as there's an inside story regarding Sam's legendary feats consuming sweets. She didn't eat these all by herself.

Thanks to Andrew, Steve and especially Samantha for organizing another fantastic evening enjoyed by all. The big takeaway for me is if you're looking for an outstanding Pinot Noir and Chardonnay from a rising star then no need to look any further than POE Wines.
