Introduction

A few friends got together for some good food and wine in a relaxed atmosphere.
All wines served un-blind.

Flight 1 - Appetizers (2 Notes)

Crab dip, cheese, humus, and a delicious fritto misto of fried calamari and garlic aioli dip.

  • NV L. Aubry Fils Champagne Premier Cru Brut 88 Points

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

A very good Champagne but a little one dimensional with apple and spice being the predominant flavors, crisp and clean style.

  • 2005 Domaine Borgeot Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Morgeot 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

Initially a great nose of intense limestone dust and then butter and poached pear on the palate finishing clean; after some air this golden yellow green colored wine became slightly maderized showing a hint of sherry that dominated the great limestone that was there earlier, the palate was fresher showing some green apple and a more taut structure; if you open now I'd suggest a pop and pour.

Flight 2 - Main Course (3 Notes)

Duck breast and a wonderful jous, confit potatoes in duck fat, arugula salad with vinaigrette and truffle oil.

  • 2002 Bernard Dugat-Py Bourgogne 90 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

The nose was very subdued in this 13+ year old Bourgogne; the palate was the main attraction showing great meaty texture and more depth than wines 2x the price, plum, dark cherry, plusher texture with a palpable tannin, still very Burgundy and less of the N. Rhone character as the previous bottle, this had less impact but drank very well; 90+.

  • 2009 P. Dubreuil-Fontaine Père & Fils Pommard 1er Cru Les Épenots 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Pommard 1er Cru

Translucent bright crimson red; there is still some oak lingering in the otherwise singular nose of sour red cherry; the palate echoes the same notes but this Pommard is fairly elegant with soft tannin and med+ depth which came out with air, very plummy, alcohol seemed a bit high at first but the wine came together nicely; again another Pommard that shows its singularity and compactness, wondering when this will become more interesting and develop more complexity- I am optimistic about its future, though.

  • 2005 Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils Volnay 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay

Bright crimson ruby red; nose is pure cherry, a little sour, very perfumed and the most aromatic of the night; the palate is softer showing less depth than the others but you have to describe this as pure, the cherry, plum, floral character in a pent up singular form that is true to a villages wine; still youthful like many '05s but on the verge of being interesting, try again in 3 years as this will likely improve.

Flight 3 - Dessert (2 Notes)

Almond cookies, petit fours, and chocolate.

  • 2001 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Herrenberg Riesling Auslese 86 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Wow, completely pale straw and showing some spritzig for a 12+ year old Auslese; nose is boring only showing a hint of Riesling character, really reminds me of a decently made Kabinett or QbA, nose lacks depth and any complexity that's normally gained with a wine this age; palate is slightly better not showing a sweet and cloying quality of a wine only 7.5%, the sweetness has subdued a bit and the acidity is better than the sugar, does not have the weight or nobility of a producer of this level or vineyard or vintage; not sure whether I opened this 25 years too early or it really just didn't bring its A game...very disappointed.

  • 2011 Jorge Ordoñez & Co. Málaga #2 Victoria 90 Points

    Spain, Andalucía, Málaga

Pale greyish yellow; nose is the main attraction with tons of floral qualities, jasmine, orange blossom, lychee reminiscent of a VT Gewurz, exotic; sweet palate with good acidity and freshness keeping it from being cloying, some honey echoes, lychee, peach syrup; very different and good.
