Good Wine with a Boring Super Bowl

Introduction

I wasn't particularly rooting for either team, just hoping for a good game. That hope was shattered early on, but at least the wine was good. There were plenty of other very good wines, but this is what I remember well.

Flight 1 (16 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine / Maison Vincent Girardin Bâtard-Montrachet 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

From 3L. Much like the bottle of the same wine opened 2 days ago. Lots of apple and pear, all ripe with some nut and spice support. Fat and lush with same fruit on palate, perhaps some peach as well, with a very Batard character.

  • 2004 Kistler Chardonnay Kistler Vineyard

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Valley

Still quite vibrant with good stone fruit and just starting to show earthiness, but overall good length, balance and intensity.

  • 2002 Champagne Le Mesnil Champagne Grand Cru Blanc de Blancs Millésimé

    France, Champagne, Champagne Grand Cru

From magnum. Very appealing crisp flavors, leaner and slightly shorter than I might expect from "Mesnil" but I think this a "value" Mesnil.

  • 2007 Domaine Leflaive Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

From magnum, from the same case as another from the fall. This didn't show anything close to the level of fruit and intensity as the prior bottle. Even with time in glass this came across as slightly muted and stripped.

  • 2004 Jean Boillot & Fils Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Little bit of peach, apple and lemon peel. Nice but slightly more mature than I would hope for a 2004. Time to drink up in next 2 years if this bottle is representative.

  • 1995 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Feusselottes Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

Seemed stewed, quite possibly heat damaged.

  • 2002 Williams Selyem Pinot Noir Central Coast 87 Points

    USA, California, Central Coast

From 3L. Surprised at how fresh and tasty this was after a decade+. Certainly mature, but good overall red cherry and strawberry with good brightness and balance.

  • 1993 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

From magnum. Sensational classically Volnay start with mature red fruit, well supported with spice and floral notes. Like many 1993s, thi has taken a while to show its real potential, but now has great balance throughout with a fairly long finish.

  • 1990 Faiveley Charmes-Chambertin 89 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru

Very pleasant mature Burgundy aromas and flavors, with slightly more black fruit than earth, just on the simple side for the vintage and terroir. Not nearly as interesting as the Beze in the next bottle.

  • 1990 Faiveley Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

Lots of ripe black fruit aromas and flavors with modest spice. Good power and very good balance of mushroom and mature fruit on finish. At a very interesting and nuanced place today.

  • 2003 Louis Jadot Chambertin-Clos de Bèze 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru

From magnum. Ripe black cherry that is starting to lose the 2003 baby fat, this has very good balance and faint animale hints. Very pleasurable today, just slightly more "2003" than "Beze."

I am not certain how far back this goes, but Jadot produces this negociant cuvee of Chambertin-Clos de Beze in addition to the well known Domaine bottling. The lack of the "Domaine Louis Jadot" notation is easy to miss if you aren't looking closely, but both bottles are shown in the photo I uploaded for the 2009 vintage.

  • 2004 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Côte-Rôtie Terres Sombres 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Very floral start with some intense black fruit aromas. Similar flavors showing blackberry and black cherry with very good spice and a meaty nature that was well textured enough for several people to think this might be from Burgundy. Best once open 2+ hours, I think this is just entering its peak drinking window.

  • 2006 Saxum Heart Stone Vineyard 87 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Paso Robles

From magnum. I thought this to be a somewhat extreme wine, with lots of jammy fruit that was on the border of fun vs over-the-top. Certainly well made in its style, I find i prefer the Saxum wines with higher percentages of Syrah (this is about the same % Syrah and Grenache along with 26% Mouvedre).

  • 2005 Domaine Comte Georges de Vogüé Chambolle-Musigny 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

From magnum. Popped and poured. Subdued red fruit aromas that emerged more noticeably with more air. Same with spice that was more background to start, more forward when tried again 45 minutes later. Flavors of red and black cherry, thyme and tarragon. Structure is at least as prominent for now, but there is a lot of everything here.

  • 1988 Château Mouton Rothschild 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Mature black fruit with leather, cigarbox aromas. Moderate fruit flavors, also mature, with moderate intensity. Doubt this will transform into something much more interesting.

  • 1985 Château Mouton Rothschild 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Far more interesting than the 1988 just tasted, this showed mature plum and cigarbox aromas with mushroom and cassis. Good balance, good length and well textured.
