Flight 1 - Young Chave (2 Notes)

  • 2004 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Juicy and youthful on the nose with a perfumed profile and classic syrah notes and a hint of bell pepper. More structured than the 2000 but with a beautifully polished and balanced feel. Great now, better with another 5+ years. Excellent. 92+

Quite a bit tighter than the '04 and took some time for the cooler dark fruits and black olive notes to emerge. Well structured (but not as structured as the '04) with loads of complexity yet subtle and graceful on the palate. This again is classic Hermitage with a lot of potential. Excellent. 92+

Flight 2 - Pair of 97s (2 Notes)

  • 1997 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Wow what a killer nose: funky stank (beautiful) with dark fruits, olives, pepper, meaty and savoury notes galore. This is powerful yet refined with loads of complexity and length. The fruit is still vibrant and this mixed with all the secondary stuff is just beautiful. Plenty of acidity and softer tannins now. Based on this bottle it's close to peak but should cruise for years. Outstanding.

  • 1997 M. Chapoutier Ermitage Le Pavillon

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Modern oak juice. Tasted like merlot aged in high toast oak. This was destroyed by the '97 Chave.

Flight 3 - Pair of TLs (2 Notes)

Flight 4 - Older Hermitage (3 Notes)

  • 1988 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

This had such a nice nose. smoked meat, black tea, black olive tapenade with smoky and earthy notes. Still has great depth and structure but it's drinking perfectly right now. Shows so much freshness (great acidity) and focus. Really good stuff. Drink or hold another decade. Excellent.

  • 1979 Domaine Jean-Louis Chave Hermitage Flawed

Unfortunately this bottle was off. Nose was all vinyl and varnish. Not much on the palate either. Too bad.

  • 1979 Paul Jaboulet Aîné Hermitage La Chapelle 93 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Another beautiful nose with sappy dark red fruits, savoury meats, black olives and leather. This is drinking perfectly right now with lively acidity and powdery tannins and maturing fruit. Lengthy finish that's all savoury goodness. I've had this wine a few times now and it never fails to impress me. Outstanding.
