France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Romanée Grand Cru
Decanted and drank over 4 hours. Initially this was tight and only revealing glimpses of earth, iron and a touch of spice. Over time more and more red fruit emerged along with great spice, but was all quite regal and subdued. Full, balanced. Silky. Got sweeter with air and then took on caramel notes and more cherry. Lingering finish.
The oldest bottle of wine I have ever consumed. Putting aside the eurphoria of trying something this old, I could not believe how much I enjoyed this. Pre-phylloxera vines. The cork crumbled. Wine was decanted and drank over 2 hours. This kept improving. A dense and striking nose of dark fruit, tea, iron and earth along with a very distinct and dominate banana bread batter note. All this carried through to the palate which was the most perfectly balanced wine I have ever had and carried with it a viscosity and glossy texture that I will probably never experience again. Very long and pure finish. A real eye-opening experience!
France, Bordeaux, Libournais, St. Émilion Grand Cru
Another incredible treat tonight. This was not as youthful, at first, as the 1880 Brane Cantenac. A bit tired with old wood, mesquite BBQ potato chips, faded dark fruit and wet bandaids. This was decanted and with time it came alive becoming more exotic and displaying a serious pineapple note. More dark fruit, floral notes and general sweetness after about 2 hours. Fabulous balance and texture. Long finish ending with an iron note.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, La Tâche Grand Cru
We got carried away at Bern's Steakhouse in Tampa last night and ordered this at the end of the meal. I had one glass and it was tasting like a Kosta Browne next to the set of 100+ year old Bordeaux wines we had prior. So we corked it and flew home to Chicago this morning and are having the rest now. In short, some how this is more vibrant and much fresher than the bottle I had in December. Tremendous spice, rose petals, a chocolate note every now and then on the nose. The palate is so detailed and pretty yet powerful. Long finish. Much more floral than the prior bottles. Apparently 24hrs of air and a flight on United Airlines does the trick!
