Tasting of 100PP wines

Introduction

Peter challenged us to bring a 100PP-wine. And one other bottle that could be memorable.
All wines tasted blind, not in flights, but one after another.
Was too busy enjoying, so I confined myself to scoring the wines on a 100-point-scale and scribbling some keywords.

  • 2007 Vérité La Joie 98 Points

    USA, California, Sonoma County

    Wide open and flattering. Awesome wine that impresses by its refinement and charme. Which is quite an achievement considering its concentration and multilayered stature. Bravo.

  • 1982 Casa Ferreirinha Douro Barca Velha 96 Points

    Portugal, Douro

    Captivating. Old-fashioned style, which I adore. Especially when served in this company. Touch of brett, outdoorsy, beautiful spicy seasoning, fresh black and red fruit play a humble but important role. Great wine.

  • 2006 Il Poggione (Proprietá Franceschi) Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Vigna Paganelli 94 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

    Extraction (too much?), tannines still drying. tasty oak, wonderful black fruit. Needs time. Hopefully the fruit survives.

  • 2010 Château Beausejour (Duffau Lagarrosse) 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru

    Sweet, candied black fruit nose. Way to tannic. Clenched aromatics, muddy, cloudy, unyielding wine. All about structure now. Not experienced enough to see the promise in this.

  • 1990 Château Montrose 99 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Saint-Estèphe

    Mindblowingly precise and complex. This stuff left me speachless. Peak drinking now, cruising through its midlife. Insane wine.

  • 2001 Greenock Creek Shiraz Apricot Block 95 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

    Wonderfully pure in its fruit, developing some maturation depth and compexity now. Very modern, very well made, very beautiful. Great wine.

    Kirsch, honeycoated peanuts, big and bold. Could use some more depth, more dimensions.

  • 2001 Domaine de la Mordorée Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée de la Reine des Bois 89 Points

    Sweetish nose, palate searching for direction. Slightly clumsy and disjointed. Finish is marked by alcohol. All the ingredients seem to be there, but it needs finetuning.
    Felt disappointed when the wrap came off... Always thought that this would be up my alley. Difficult phase?

  • 1994 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 94 Points

    Mature, yet full of potential. Strong tannic frame, which merely accentuates the long finish. A great Napa-Cabernet with a distinguished and traditional feel.

  • 2007 Domaine du Pégau Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée da Capo 91 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    Gorgeous, luxurious nose of black fruit, spices, oak and damp earth. Alas, in the mouth its marred by alcohol and a clumsy, disjointed mouthfeel. Trying too hard to impress.

    Open, friendly and very compelling. Spectacular purity of nuances and lots of juiciness and fun. Liked it a lot better than the C9dP's we had tonight...

    This was wild, big and classy, but not giving all it's got... unfortunately. I think it would have done better when given more time in the decanter. Now it showed its darker, gloomy side. Brooding, tannic and backward. And a bright future.

    Murky, dirty laundry, dry ditch, disjointed. Discussion in the group whether this is an off-bottle or that this presentation is a result of the scorching vintage and its roasted fruit.

    Massive wine, but some elegance and sense of place is starting to peek through... Plum, black cherry, pepper, roasted herbs, compost. Yum.

  • 2005 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon 99 Points

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

    Wow.. Those QC wines always take me by surprise... Didn't saw this one coming and it knocked me out of my boots. Blackberrypuree, kirsch, sandalwood, black tea, dark chocolate, dry-aged beef and fantastic tannines that give way to an everlasting succulence throughout the finish. Number one wine.

    Interesting mixed presentation: combining old- and new world characrteristics. Generous use of oak, clear acidic presence, bright cherry and also some prune-pie nuances. Very good wine, but clearly outshined by its predecessor.

  • 2009 Château Pontet-Canet 95 Points

    Very intense wine, a little rough 'round the edges, probably very young. Opulent mouthfeel, sweet tannines which need to integrate. Clearly cabernet dominated. Bordeaux or Napa...? Dunno.

    Bright gold, fat, complex, tropical swirl, waxy, vanilla, pepper, ginger, mandarin, powerful. Drinking great now.

  • 2001 Château d'Yquem 96 Points

    More elegant, more finesse. Fruit has a wonderful candied lemon-and-lime touch. Palate is very creamy and mouthfilling. More crystalline and feminine, probably more complex, but my palate is almost shot by now...

Closing

Again, we had a fantastic evening in Restaurant Bottles, courtesy to Peter for putting it all together and to Jens and his crew for hosting and serving us a lovely diner.

Personal WOTN: Montrose 1990 and Quilceda Creek 2005 (ex aequo), followed closely by Bonneau du Martray's 1992 Corton-Charlemagne.
Other wines to look out for: Gauby Coume Gineste, Phelps Fogdog, Alto Moncayo.
