Robersons Wine, London
Tasted Friday, November 24, 2006 by Russell Faulkner with 792 views
A nice way to spend a Thursday evening, but overall I am not a huge fan of Sauternes. These wines are clearly very impressive when at their best, but I would rather drink sweet Chenin or Riesling, especially when price is considered.
Wine of the tasting, and the only one anything like mature was the 1975.
1975 Château d'Yquem 95 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Light gold with some amber, very strong expressive nose of botrytis, honied almonds and apricot tart, tightly pinched acidity that runs the full length of the long finish. Well balanced but the acidity is a little too keen for the fruit, enormous density showing just a little mature notes, which moved to herbal / tea after an hour or so.

1986 Château d'Yquem 93 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Medium gold, mouch younger, quite restrained on the nose, a lush velvet texture though, with a soft attack, lighter citrus fruit, more citrus than soft fruit. Very long and clearly immature. I liked this much more than others.

1990 Château d'Yquem 95 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Rich golden, a peculiar nose, slightly burnt? A massive wine though, dense punchy fruit, so concentrated, but a bit too powerful now for me, needs more time to spread its wings, a long way from maturity.

1991 Château d'Yquem 88 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Very light, limpid, a hollow nose with faint oak. Much lighter style, lower sugar levels, lacks concentration, with a slight bitter note on the finish. Still a good, fun wine.

1996 Château d'Yquem 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Light-medium gold, showing clear oak on the nose, sweet ripe pear tarte tatin. Very rich with fat fruit, fresh with tight acidity, much more layered than the 1991, just a little brash and wild now. Shows great potential.

1997 Château d'Yquem 90 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Light gold, a dumb nose, with a hint of spicy oak. Lighter in style with lower concentration, but none the worse for it, apporachable now and a very enjoyable wine.

1999 Château d'Yquem 92 Points
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Light gold, clear oak, almost harsh at present. Soft and very ripe but quite low levels of concentration, like a baby version of the 1986

2001 Château d'Yquem
France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes
Very light lemon, sweet spicy oak, very fragrant, perfumed with complex light fruits, well balanced, not overly concentrated. I am still to be convinced by this, the balance is superb but I find a lack of density. Very long finish though, of candied fruit, could still taste it an hour later. Not rated.
