Justin Wells hosted a tasting of California Cabs at Roy Hersh's house.
We started with a very varied pair of whites before breaking into 5 flights of reds.
Charcoal with a hint of chambord on the nose. Mmm, this has nice acidity with a lot of structure. Sort of Montelena-esque. This is still pretty juicy and wound up with some dark brooding notes and hints of cranberry.

This has a serious Togni-esque nose with lots of stalk. Some tomato paste as well and some soy hinting at a tired wine. The palate is spicy and a bit hot and punishing, astringent. This manages to be both ripe and searing at the same time, a strange combination. Not a huge fan of this.

I wish Roy would stop bringing these wines to teach us a lesson... This reminded me of the first wine (the 1992 Hess Estate Reserve) but with a raspberry and floral character, sort of Quilceda like. This has big tannins and is tight with lots of minerality. Loved it!

A nice bit of raspberry and some dustiness on the nose. This is tannic and medicinal, not very rewarding or friendly. I don't think it's cooked, but this was underwhelming.

Poopy, bretty and grape jelly all at once. Some tobacco comes out with time and the grapiness subsides. The palate is very, very sweet. I guessed that it was a Mondavi, close. A bit over the top for me, although I appreciated the dose of brett.

Leafy, green and stalky with lots of brett. The palate was a bit punishing, very tannic, although juicy and vibrant in the mid-palate. Pretty mouthwatering, and in the end I decided that this rocks. Boy this is going to take some time to come around though, even for this tannin lover.

This was my WOTN. Huge notes of crushed raspberry, soaring, juicy, vibrant and powerful. This really reminded me of a Quilceda, again, lots of bright aromatics and powerful tannins. Gorgeously balanced.

Huge, licorice, leather, smoke, an awesome nose! The palate if firm and powerful with dark beryy, although it's a bit sweet.

A medicinal nose with rosemary, smoke and a hint of horse. This is big and burly but lacks a bit of verve. Still, rather nice.

A little smokey and charred with some brown sugar. This is amazingly lush and ripe, a huge palate presence, with impressive tannins on the finish. Terrific wine.

A bit candied. The palate is very tannic with a punishing finish. Searing, astringent. Not fun. Maybe my palate had been corrupted by the richer California wines tasted before it, but this was just not up to snuff.

Candied, cloying, stewy and stemmy. Barely palatable.

Bretty nose. Powerful, drying tannins. It doesn't sound very nice, but this was actually a pretty darned nice, chunky, Howell Mountain Cabernet. Break out the steak!

Nice raspberry. A little bit nameless and faceless. Good sweet fruit, spicy, with a bit of oak. A nicely made wine.

Huge, grapey, crushing and smokey. This is a bit sweet with a medicinal finish.

Finally we cleansed our palates with one last gem...
AP# 19. Awesome, awesome wine! Stinky mineral. This has the cut and acidity of a top Eiswein, excellent!

What an AMAZING nose of melon with some talc. The palate is bracingly clean and almost shockingly dry and in contrast to the nose. What a fabulous summer sipper!

A bad bottle? Doughy, leesy and cheesy. Distinctly NOT good. Blech.
