Introduction

Just some random notes from assorted tastings, meals, and purchased bottles. One can drink pretty well here (also not so well at times, as in the case of a less than stellar array of Languedoc Rousillon wines that were shown at Caves Auge).

Flight 1 (30 Notes)

  • 2009 Domaine Guiberteau Saumur Clos de Guichaux

    France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Saumur

    (6/10/2014)

Light golden. Honeyed with strong citrus component. Rich Chenin texture, deep and complex without the oxidative qualities I noted 2 years ago. On the other hand, the acidity did not seem as bright in this bottle. Mixed take but there is a lot to like.

  • 2011 Georges Descombes Morgon Vieilles Vignes

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

    (6/10/2014)

Light red. Much more subdued than when tasted last year, and while it is good, I don't think it's at the level of the 2 vintages that preceded it.

  • 2010 François Chidaine Montlouis-sur-Loire Les Bournais

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Montlouis-sur-Loire

    (6/10/2014)

Light yellow. Crackling citrus and one of those Chenins that has Sauvignon-like herbs. Lighter than Vouvray, Demi-sec level of sweetness, pungent minerality. Really good tonight.

  • 2009 Château de Chassagne-Montrachet Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet

    (6/11/2014)

Light red. Reduction and a smell that reminded me of Loire Cabernet Franc. Better in the mouth-typical lightweight Cote de Beaune red with blackberry and licorice. I suppose it could last several more years.

  • 2010 Domaine Marquis d'Angerville Volnay 1er Cru Champans

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

    (6/11/2014)

We ordered this hoping that it would be more open than the Clos des Ducs or Taillepieds, and our prayers were answered. Light ruby. Extraordinarily forthcoming aromatics full of red flowers and tart cherries. Beautiful feel, round and soft by Angerville standards, but with plenty of acidity and ripe tannins in a supporting role. Gorgeous mixture of soil and the delicate fruit. Superb-did I get it before it closes up or is this just not in the cards? A wonderful treat to have it drinking so beautifully now.

  • 2002 Domaine Weinbach Riesling Schlossberg Cuvée Ste. Catherine

    France, Alsace, Alsace Grand Cru

    (6/11/2014)

Deep yellow. Prototypical nose of stone fruit and black tea. Very fine texture, medium to full body, off dry, intense spiced peach buttressed by strong acidity and a ton of soil. This worked well with a stinky washed rind cheese, much as an Alsatian Gewürztraminer might. In great shape without a trace of incipient oxidation (although just as I say that, the dregs in the glass have a touch of nuttiness-stop the presses!).

  • 2009 François Raveneau Chablis 1er Cru Butteaux

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

    (6/11/2014)

Pale. Some sulfur, but then classic lemon/sea breeze mix. Light and lean, tart, juicy lemon zest, great acidity. I would never have picked it out as a 2009 for all of its structure. Very young, extremely promising. I bet it will be even better over the next few days.

Yes, impressive development overnight. The sulfur recedes to reveal brighter orange while retaining terrific acidity and soil.

  • 2011 Alphonse Mellot Sancerre Vieilles Vignes Les Romains

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    (6/12/2014)

Medium yellow. Exotic pineapple and orange. Medium body with some glycerine. Some oak is present giving it a generous feel. Excellent lean finish to balance the front end richness. Not nearly as ripe or fat as the aromatics would suggest. Very good, but this is on the woodier side of Mellot wines-preferred the 2011 Demoiselles.

Several hours later, much less woody and more citric.

  • 2010 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    (6/12/2014)

Light yellow. Hazelnut and ripe orange. Amazing texture, not a huge or powerful wine, but it is caressing and long. Fairly open and easy for a 2010 Grand Cru. I thought this was excellent and beautifully balanced, but it must be said that this is more Raveneau than Chablis. Just close your eyes, think Corton Charlemagne, and you'll be fine.

  • 2010 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Fuées

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    (6/12/2014)

Light to medium red. Explosive nose with charred, bacony scents followed by the full array of intense red fruits-strawberry, raspberry, and cherry. Gorgeous feel on the palate for a light weight wine, but some tannins add a good bit of grip at the end. At once both sexy and clearly holding a lot in reserve. By way of comparison, less forward on the palate than 2010 Angerville Champans yesterday. This is quintessential Chambolle in its delicacy and character of its all red fruit (although not quite as much for the very noticeable barrel contribution). So glad to have a chance to try it even if much too young.

  • 2008 Domaine Huet Vouvray Demi-Sec Le Haut-Lieu

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Vouvray

    (6/13/2014)

Light golden. Incredibly honeyed for a Demi-Sec. Ripe orange, even some apricot. Moderate sweetness, good tart acidity, only ding is that the finish falls and seems dilute. Overall, surprisingly good though.

  • 2011 Bernard Boisson-Vadot Meursault Les Grands Charrons

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    (6/13/2014)

Light yellow. Some sulfur and almond paste. Very appealing medium weight for Meursault without undue heft. Rich citrus, a touch of cinnamon, and excellent acidity. My only qualm is that some wood imparts bitterness toward the end. That said, very much Meursault in spirit, done discretely in terms of the cooperage, and really good lieu dit wine.

  • 2010 Domaine Marc Morey & Fils Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Vergers

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru

    (6/13/2014)

Yellow. Nose of pure orange peel and white flowers. Elegant weight, very silky feel, a touch of lactic creaminess, gorgeous citrus leaning toward lemon, perfect acidity and balance. An absolutely wonderful Chassagne for drinking now and over the next few years so as not to lose its seductive fruit, although it is so superbly balanced that it might well keep well beyond that point.

  • 2007 Domaine Ghislaine Barthod Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru Les Véroilles

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny 1er Cru

    (6/13/2014)

Pale ruby. Torrefaction more than light red fruit on the nose. Light weight, some crunchy light red berries, but the wood robs the finish of its length, instead giving an odd, astringent chocolatey quality. I've tasted this twice over the year or so with the same generally negative impression. Difficult to understand since the Cras from this fragile vintage is wonderful and not marked by intrusive wood.

Coming back to it the next day, I must say that the terroir spoke more forcefully and the wood less so. Maybe I am too pessimistic about its future.

  • 2012 Fournier Père & Fils Sancerre Cuvée Silex

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

    (6/13/2014)

Almost watery looking. Some pungency and white grapefruit. Light and lively, essence of grapefruit pith, lime, and stone.

  • 2007 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    (6/14/2014)

Yellow/greenish. Oh man, this is all bro thinness and stone upon opening. Light and pretty austere at first, but the underripe lemon eventually seeps its way through the rocks. Still, this is mainly about the non-fruit elements. The delicate style of the vintage combined with the unoaked vilification of this producer have resulted in a gem of an old fashioned Chablis. Warning-avoid if you are seeking fleshy, fruity Chardonnay.

  • 2012 Domaine Fond Cyprès Corbières Hebe Flawed

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières

    (6/14/2014)

Just a godawful nose flu and mouthful of brett.

  • 2011 Domaine Fond Cyprès Corbières Hebe

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières

    (6/14/2014)

More supple and light than the 2012, not bad, but still a hefty dose of brett.

  • 2012 Domaine Fond Cyprès Corbières Grenache n°5

    France, Languedoc Roussillon, Languedoc, Corbières

    (6/14/2014)

Magnum. Light ruby. By far the cleanest of the 3 wines. Pretty aromatics and flavors of raspberry and cherry. Light, not a lot of complexity. Drink now.

  • 2013 Domaine Yoyo La Tranchée

    France, Vin de France

    (6/14/2014)

Light color. Good, solid southern French wine with earth and some herbs.

  • 2013 Domaine Yoyo KM31

    France, Vin de France

    (6/14/2014)

Pale color. Lots of red fruit and flavor for as pale as it looks. The best wine shown by this producer. For current drinking.

  • 2012 Domaine Yves Cuilleron St. Joseph Lyseras Blanc

France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, St. Joseph

    (6/14/2014)

Medium yellow. Ripe fruit nose, but wonderful acidity and minerality to leaven the weight and viscosity. Very good.

  • 2012 Domaine Yves Cuilleron Condrieu La Petite Cote

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

    (6/14/2014)

A nice, lighter weight Viognier that is clearly varietal but not overwhelmingly floral. Very fine minerality.

  • 2012 Catherine et Pierre Breton Chinon Beaumont

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

    (6/14/2014)

Light in color and weight, typical green herbs, dill, and red fruit. Medium length. Really nothing special, very average quality.

  • 2012 Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Nuits d'Ivresse

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Bourgueil

    (6/14/2014)

I was surprised that this had more saturated color, concentration, and tannin than the Chinon Beaumont. Solid and serious, black fruited. This needs a few years time.

  • 2013 Catherine et Pierre Breton Bourgueil Trinch!

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Bourgueil

    (6/14/2014)

Vaguely carbonic nose. Thin and seemingly underripe with a lean, green aftertaste. Not pleasurable in the least.

  • 2007 Deutz Champagne Blanc de Blancs

    France, Champagne

    (6/14/2014)

Light yellow, active bead. A medium weight Blanc de Blancs with some lemon custard, freshness and excellent minerality. This tasted great on a lovely summer evening.

  • NV Champagne Lallier Champagne Premier Cru Brut Rosé

    France, Champagne, Champagne Premier Cru

    (6/14/2014)

Salmon colored. Very bright aromas of fresh strawberries. Weighty, dry, and serious with more black cherry Pinot fruit and some tannic bite on the finish.

  • 2004 Joseph Drouhin Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Blanc

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Beaune 1er Cru

    (6/14/2014)

Half bottle. Medium yellow. Ripe, almost tropical nose. No sign of oxidation. Lush and obviously oaky with a strong vanilla flavor but still delightful citrus fruit. The wood does give some astringency at the end, keeping the finish from being as long as it might. Still, a good showing from a small bottle at 10 years of age.

  • 2009 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

    (6/14/2014)

Half bottle. Lovely, deep, fully saturated purple. Wild, complex, mindblowing nose-violets, other spring flowers, red and black fruit, charred meat, and spices. Wow, a wine to just sniff all night long. Full bodied and intense but not overly fruity. The acidity really impressed me, and the tannins are round but substantial. Obviously just giving a fraction of what it ultimately will on the palate, but ooh, that Cote Rotie nose...
