Berry Bros & Rudd

Strongly perfumed with aromatic cherries catching the eye. By contrast the palate was slightly ungenerous with limited substance and texture.

Not as obviously pleasing as the "Charmes" cuvee of the same vintage with only limited fruit. Howevr, it has a structure which suggests real promise for the future. One to keep for a while I think.

Very good. Rich fruit on the nose which is followed by a finish with real drive, pulling you to take another sip. One of the wines of the tasting.

A little non-descript by comparison to the wines that preceeded and followed it. Pefectly pleasant fruit with some drive on the finish but not memorable.

A substantially more serious effort than the "Cote du Py" cuvee which is made from old vines. Dark brooding fruit with almost meaty aromas dominate the nose leading onto a chewy tannic finish. Not very typical but interesting nonetheless.

From the old vines of the Javernières cuvee to truly ancient vines (c. 140 years old) of Les Impenitents. This felt like a more refined wine in every aspect by comparison to the former cuvee. The fruit on the nose feels refined rather than opulent and a degree of grip and structure are present but not to an overpowering extent. Classy stuff. One to keep a while.

Confected fruit greets the nose like an explosion. A real departure from the Morgon wines that preceeded this flight. The finish was a little hot and with limited guile. Perhaps it should be drunk now rather than considered too deeply?

Unfortunately not in a good place at the moment with a massively reductive nose impairing assessment of the wine. That said, the structure suggested better things to come with a sweet palate and long finish. One to put away for a while.

Muted dark fruit on the nose which is followed up by a seriously heavy hit of acid. All a bit out of kilter for me and not as refined as one might hope.

Slightly reductive nose with only muted fruit showing. However, again palate and finish show good structure suggesting that it may simply be a case of biding ones time.

Racey acidity and drive is what this wine is all about. A pleasure to drink now but surely with the best years still ahead of it. Only criticism is that the finish is perhaps a little hot.

One of the more serious Beaujolais wines I have tasted. Sweet red fruit with some herbal complexity on the nose. Into a very correct palate with trademark acidity. Lovely stuff.

A little on the young side? Racy acidity and drive combines well with primary red fruit. However, I suspect that this wine has more to offer and will deliver increased pleasure in the years to come.

Old plot within a plot. Extrememly pricey for a beaujolais. Doesn't justify the price tag for me. Feels more burgundian than a beaujolais should but maybe that is the point?

2011 Domaine Chignard Fleurie Les Moriers
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
Playful, light and delicate. Soft red fruit into a tense palate with plenty of drive, leading to a refreshing finish.

2012 Domaine Métrat et Fils Fleurie La Roilette Vieilles Vignes
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Fleurie
The wine's transparent light hue gave the impression of a typically light fleurie. However, the unusually dark fruit flavours that greeted the nose belied this, nor the grip that followed on the palate. Not the most subtle wine but nevertheless giving plenty of pleasure at the moment.

2012 Domaine Dubost Brouilly Cuvée de Vieilles Vignes
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Brouilly
Obviously denser than the Fleurie's that preceeded it. Impressive structure with a clear tannic edge but less playful fruit flavours than I would have expected from a wine at this age.

2011 Alain Michaud Brouilly
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Brouilly
Dark (for a Beaujoulais) in colour. Lovely vibrant red fruit greets on the nose and a silky smooth palate. Classy stuff. Only room for improvement would be the finish which felt a little short and ungenerous.

2011 Château Thivin Côte de Brouilly Les Sept Vignes
France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Côte de Brouilly
This felt like it was in a really good place right now. Expressive fruit on the nose into a weighty palate and a finish with verve and drive. Just what you look for in a good Beaujolais.

From 90 year old vines. A very sensual experience. Subtle red fruit amidst interesting herbal notes. Rich round palate and energetic finish.
