Introduction

This was a great dinner, but I left the restaurant feeling angry about two things. First, 3 out of 5 2005 MONTRACHETS were pre oxidized. Despite great producers and a great vineyard, they were flawed. It's outrageous this continues to happen and this experience will deeply impact my buying going forward. Second, the restaurant charged us $65 corkage for EACH bottle despite messing up two blind courses and not timing the flights correctly. Not cool.

  • 2005 Henri Boillot Montrachet Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

    Horribly oxidized.

  • 2005 Bouchard Père et Fils Montrachet 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Decanted and drank over 3 hours. Initially quite shy on the nose, but opened to reveal lovely fruit, slightly herbal and minty note and great minerality. No where close to the depth of the Ramonet but still very nice.

  • 2005 Domaine Ramonet Montrachet 97 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Montrachet Grand Cru

Decanted and drank over 3 hours. A brilliant nose citrus, honey, some oak but no mint or herbal note which I was expecting. Powerful and rich in the mouth, but with a perfect elegance. Superb balance and I just loved the viscosity. Very long lingering finish.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 1998 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

There is definitely a tell tale rhubarb and burnt spice note to the 1998 Leroy's I have had lately. This was quite good, but the fruit just seemed slightly muddled compared to other vintages. I wonder where this will go.

  • 1991 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Very similar to the bottle I had earlier this year. Remarkably youthful. Outstanding red and black fruit and wonderful spice. Not terribly nuanced but a great full on Leroy experience.

  • 1992 Domaine Leroy Clos de la Roche 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Lovely Leroy nose of dark fruit, spice and a hint of tar. The palate was leaner than the nose would have suggested and a bit short on the finish. That said, this is a great success from this vintage and I think it has a ways to go.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2000 Domaine Leroy Corton-Renardes 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru

Another fantastic bottle of Leroy Corton Renardes. Full on Leroy nose with intense spice along with red, black and blue fruits. All of this carried through to the open and expansive and highly nuanced palate. Powerful and elegant this was a real pleasure and a great example of a wonderful 2000 Grand Cru. This will improve, but is delicious today.
