Flight 1 (11 Notes)

  • 2010 Domaine Bois de Boursan Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée des Félix

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark core with garnet rim; leather, dusty, perfumed, cedar, sandy, some animal; nice cherry, raspberry, grainy, Brett more visible on palate, cherry, dried fruit, garrigue, bitter chocolate, dry finish, harder vintage; though it was reminiscent of '09 Clos des Papes but called it '10 Felix.

  • 2004 Bernard Faurie Hermitage

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Dark core though see through with larger dull maroon rim; violets, brine, olives, granite, plush with raspberry plum and cherry, black pepper; nice grip, bright acid, tart cherry, olives, slightly lighter texture lead me to Cote Rotie rather than a dense Hermitage; very good.

  • 2001 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Dark crimson core with rose rim, good clarity; aged nose of mahogany, dusty red cherry, roses, fennel, maple, celery seed, slight brown sugar; nice delicately aged texture, tart raspberry, black tea, long finish of light raspberry cranberry and sour cherry; very good; called '01 Charvin.

  • 2004 Château Montrose

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Opaque core with thin dull carmine rim; green pepper, leather, currant, cigar, fruit cake; surprisingly softer tannin, very drinkable, classic Cabernet based Bordeaux, darker fruit, nice richness in a lesser year which I'd describe as a Bordeaux drinker's vintage.

  • 2003 The Standish Wine Company Shiraz The Standish

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Opaque core with dull thin maroon rim, some sediment; dark berry, tar, violets, sour plum, petroleum, slight menthol, olive, ripe cooked fruit, some grip, rope dark fruit, vanilla on the finish, big but good balance to keep it drinkable, glycerin; thought this was impressive Aussie Shiraz so I called '07 Standish.

  • 2005 Domaine Tortochot Mazis-Chambertin

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Mazis-Chambertin Grand Cru

Dark ruby to rim, see through; fresh spice, dark sour cherry, rich, slightly modern, floral, fruity, slightly reductive, young, iron; taut, good tannin, plum, dark cherry, nice fat, young and fresh, overall I'd say this is a little dumb, wait longer if you have some.

  • 2006 Casanova di Neri Brunello di Montalcino Tenuta Nuova

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Lighter extraction with darker core and more crimson rim; dried cherry, sexy rose, cinnamon, menthol, spice; soft texture though some tannin, spice, sour plum, dried cherry; delicious; more of a style in line with Fuligni which I don't associate with Casanova di Neri; surprisingly delicious.

  • 2006 Ciacci Piccolomini d'Aragona Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Santa Caterina D'Oro Vigna di Pianrosso

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Dark core with copper rim; high toned mint, sour plum, cherry, roses, orange oil, hard; dried red cherry, cedar, tannic; young, requires a few more years at least; a dead ringer for Barolo.

  • 2001 Eraldo Viberti Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

See through crimson with orange rim; dried red fruit, roses, orange zest, cedar, nickel; very dry and tannic, red cherry, medicinal, licorice; confused this as Brunello.

  • 1998 Podere Rocche dei Manzoni Langhe Quatr Nas

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Langhe DOC

Darker core with dark dull garnet rim; weedy, root vegetables, earth, darker fruit along with some red, aged, nutty, kind of bizarre, a distinct green note, tannin; didn't make sense to call Nebbiolo on this but the blend kind of makes sense.

  • 2006 Giacomo Borgogno & Figli Barolo

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Darker core with crimson rim; red cherry, ripe though some notes of under-ripeness, tea, sandy, cedar; sour cherry on the palate, dried fruit, cedar, roses, tea, almost cinnamon, dry tannin, hard red cherry on the finish; good.
