France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very dark core with plum rim, some sediment; meaty, dark raspberry, black pepper, garrigue, big, cement, violets; solid palate, meaty and rich, deep raspberry, dark fruit, black currant, fresh finish, higher alcohol on finish; 92+.
Deep dull crimson, good clarity, rusty rim; floral, rose, pure cherry, menthol, slight cedar; smooth texture, tobacco, dried cherry and rose, tar, good wrap of tannin, slight bitterness on finish, almost a rusty note; good, very linear.
Opaque core with bricking; sweat, stank, red and black currant, coffee filtered through a dirty sock, green pepper, Bordeaux; black currant on the palate, good structure and balance, green pepper, nice fruit, leather, dark roast coffee; very nice balance for 2002.
Deep golden green; slight honey, candied lime, deep chiffon, lemon pastry; zingy acid on palate, pineapple, very limey, petrol, some mineral but fairly singular; tasty but I'm disappointed, was expecting more complexity and roughness.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru
Dull ruby, pale rim, see through; served a little warm, incense, sour dark cherry, soft raspberry, white rock, leaner, good freshness, rose; sweet tart fruit, dark and red cherry, nice sweetness, powdery white rock, spicy; very tasty; nailed it.
Italy, Veneto, Valpolicella, Amarone della Valpolicella Classico
Darker core with garnet rim; fainter nose, red fruit, almost bitter chocolate, sulfur, meaty, some green, Mourvedre?; cedar on the palate, raspberry, tart fruit, low acid, higher alcohol, tart finish; very young, fooled all of us as a modern CdP, give this time.
Opaque core with thin garnet rim; loads of black currant, sandy, leather, dark chocolate, warmer region; softer texture, green pepper, red cherry, some tannin but not Bordeaux tannin, sweeter fruit, licorice; makes sense; good.
Very dark core with thin bright garnet rim; sweet tart red and dark fruit, currant, raspberry, slight plum, really ripe; volcanic on the palate, ashy, almost prune, young, meaty, slight polish; called Carbonione; liking these 2011 SuperTuscans at this young age, 91+.
Cloudy crimson, orange rim; nutty, autumnal, orange oil, mahogany, leather, sour cherry; musky cherry, silky, texture, a little disjointed but tasty; very similar to Quintarelli Valpo; was on Musar from the color alone.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Ruchottes-Chambertin Grand Cru
See through dull crimson with orange pale rim; aged, rusty, sour cherry, sweaty, sweet caraway, noble, stank; palate is solid with sour cherry, full, rich, mushroom, sous bois, great acid, sweet tannin, amazing balance; peaking but should be beautiful for many years to come, no pyrazine at all!; delicious.
