Introduction

First serious kind of wine dinner in Singapore since moving here 2015. James was introduced by dear friend YK and selected an Italian joint No Meny known for having no menu but you can still request dishes they know how to make. Great ambience and with scatter fresh flowers in wine crates all over the place.

Flight 1 - Openers - White and Champs (2 Notes)

Pastrami and Rye, some pate. Still water.

  • 2010 Torres Milmanda 90 Points

Spain, Catalunya, Tarragona, Conca de Barberà

Good white, upfront, open, with floral and mineral notes in good balance to each other. Sharpish finish (in a good way) smacks the lips satisfyingly.

  • 2008 Vigneti Massa Barbera Colli Tortonesi Monleale 89 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Colli Tortonesi

A good opener for the an evening of tasting. Not stunning but has consistent flavours of ripe fruit, chocolate, coal, leather, tar. Its like a tune up of the palette before moving to the main attractions.

Flight 2 - Pasti - Ravioli and Risotto (3 Notes)

Piping hot pasta out of the pan, steaming from the plate, sharp cheese over the lot of it. Bliss.

Flight 3 - Bistecca (2 Notes)

A tad dry but the edges and the fatty sides were succulent and melted in the mouth. The 68 Roqueta was a stunner mainly due to being perfectly preserved all of its 46 years of life. The Artadi gave its consistently outstanding and flavourful contribution.

  • 1968 Bodegas Roqueta Catalunya Masia Roqueta Tinto Gran Reserva 95 Points

    Spain, Catalunya

Incredible to catch this wine at this moment. It still has fruit, alongside, jam, ash, coal, granite and ripe plums, tons of plums. In fact, it has just started becoming viscous and sticky, yet not overly so, such that it made for a headspin of a tasting somewhere between a good vintage Bordeaux and fortified wine. Storage must have been excellent all these 40+ years and the cork behaved exceptionally well. Unforgettable pull and pour.

  • 1995 Artadi Rioja Pagos Viejos 93 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alavesa, Rioja

[James Q Wine Dinner No Menu, 10 Mar 2015, Singapore]. Rich, red velvety and smooth, with that signature Artadi concentrated cherry, honey, choc and jam. Took 40 mins in the decanter to wake up then was elegant, powerful and balanced, yet with enough space for a plethora of flavours to come through. Some commented that it was a blend ! It is that mouthfilling and satisfying.
