Flight 1 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Domaine Ramonet Bourgogne-Aligoté 85 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne-Aligoté

Not particularly complex, but quite pleasant and refreshing with some air. Initially it's a bit dull with lots of ripe citrus fruit flavours and not much more, but with some time it becomes a bit more savoury on the palate while a higher toned minty note emerges on the nose. A touch soft, but perhaps that's 09?

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

  • 2005 Cayuse Syrah Cailloux Vineyard 82 Points

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Walla Walla Valley

This has not aged gracefully - either that, or my palate's really changed a lot since I had it last. But this is all about exuberant, ripe fruit - lots of ripe blueberry and black cherry flavours accented with some spice and VA notes, and doesn't show the earthy or meaty complexity I recall this showing when much younger. It's a big wine, and the alcohol and VA both stick out on the finish. Not a fan.

  • 2002 Mount Langi Ghiran Shiraz Mast Rare Reserve Block 92 Points

    Australia, Victoria

Another great bottle. Totally classic, old school Aussie Shiraz, with a core of elegant red and dark fruited flavours framed by more savoury earthy, tarry, smoky, and faint herbal accents. There's still a fair bit of grainy tannin here and bright acidity beneath, and the balance is fantastic.

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2006 Jean Bourdy Côtes du Jura Rouge 88 Points

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Pretty herb-tinged red fruit up front, turning more savoury and earthy on the middle. It's a very light, elegant wine with most of the structure coming from the acidity, though it feels a touch thin and short on the back end.

  • 2007 Philippe Pacalet Chambolle-Musigny

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny

I liked this a lot three years ago when it had really bright, appealing fruit and florality. Unfortunately it has aged about as gracefully in the years since as a bottle of milk would.

Flight 4 (2 Notes)

  • 2009 Charles Joguet Chinon Les Varennes du Grand Clos 88 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

This is a beast. Incredibly dense and concentrated with lots of ripe dark berried fruit tinged with faint herbal and earthy notes. With time the fruit takes a step back and it becomes more savoury, but the sheer density of the fruit and the amount of tannin makes this pretty challenging to drink now, and it's more about potential than pleasure.

  • 2011 Domaine Bernard Baudry Chinon Franc de Pied 92 Points

    France, Loire Valley, Touraine, Chinon

Very pretty. Tobacco leaf, green herbs, dusty earth, and very fresh red and dark fruited flavours come together on a frame that's all about elegance and finesse. The tannin here is incredibly fine grained, and it's so graceful on the palate with a gentle, silky texture and bright acids giving it good lift.

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

  • 1997 Zilliken (Forstmeister Geltz) Saarburger Rausch Riesling Auslese #9 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Another great bottle of this, and I'm kicking myself for not buying more when I could. A blast of petrol and smoky funk on the nose, but the palate is an array of very fresh orchard fruits, honey, floral notes, and crystalline minerality. There's moderate sweetness balanced by a spine of powerful acidity that keeps this incredibly fresh and precise, and remarkable length. Fantastic.

  • 2005 Selbach-Oster Zeltinger Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese *** 95 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Incredible power and intensity here. This feels like a Beerenauslese, with an array of honey, vanilla, spicy botrytis notes, apricots, and other ripe tropical fruits all coming together very seamlessly into a whole that's immensely sweet, but also superbly balanced by its acidity. The flavours clings to the palate and resonate long after each sip. Absolutely fantastic wine, though it's still very primary now (albeit fantastic), and I can't imagine how much more time it'll need in the cellar.
