I'm on a roll - so be it. I drank one of these with Salil and Ken recently, and thought I'd check my own holdings. Much the same: stolid, blocky, not showing much; and even with a day of air it's only marginally more enjoyable. I'll wait and see on the rest.

Dinner with Salil and Zach (Salil's, Albany, NY): Pop and pour. No nose. Muted palate of dried red fruit with a bit of oxidation. Salil and Zach think it's too young. They know these wines better than I do, but it seems to me to be on the decline.

Bizarre showing, I'm not sure what to make of this - other than the rule of 15 might occasionally be off. It starts out with bright floral-tinged red and black fruit, but quickly closes down into a fairly tannic shell and becomes aromatically mute after an hour or so. Leftovers the next day change quite a bit with the fruit taking a step back and a more savoury, gravelly mineral character emerging, but it still seems rather reserved and doesn't show any of the depth it had right on opening. I'll give my other bottles a while and see what happens with a few more years in the cellar.

Sometimes wines just settle into a groove. Tonight’s bottle has done that. Where five years ago it was still disparate elements, it has now knitted into a whole picture. The classic meat, earth, tar and floral elements of Syrah are all there, and merged together to form one piece, a picture that obeys the rule of thirds with each element in the proper place of the entire composition. The finish trails off into the distance, inviting me to enter the picture.

Remarkably, 5 years between bottles and my impression is quite similar. Lovely and oh so juicy red fruit. The Serine has admirable depth but not tons of width. Great with food and a delight to drink.
