Introduction

Yesterday, my wife and I were invited over to friends for a relaxing day of food, conversation and wine. There was one other couple. The wines (except the Riesling) were provided by our hosts. All of the wines were consumed over 7 hours.

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2012 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett 92 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Another great showing. Screw capped. Light golden in color. The nose has nice minerality with a bit of pineapple and slight peach. On the palate, refreshing outside on a hot day. Slightly sweet. Good acidity. Served slightly cooler than cellar temp. Very nice.

  • 2007 Maple Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay Cadus Flawed

    USA, Ohio, Grand River Valley

Cork was dried out despite being well cellared. Wine was oxidized. Not completely shot but we spilled the bottle down the drain. A shame.

  • 2008 Maple Ridge Vineyard Chardonnay San Chene Maple Ridge Vineyard 87 Points

    USA, Ohio, Grand River Valley

A nice enough showing for this Ohio wine at 7 years from vintage. Golden in color. The nose has quite a bit of spice to it with some red apple. Medium bodied. On the palate, this is still holding up but lacks any real complexity. Still, there is some apple fruit left along with that spice/fresh cut lumber quality. I would not hold a lot longer though.

  • 2012 Barnett Vineyards Pinot Noir Tina Marie Vineyard 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Green Valley of Russian River Valley

I had not had this before. Very nice. Seems to be maturing quickly and is in a very nice spot right now. Ruby/purple in color. The nose has sour cherries, a bit dusty and some vanilla. On the palate, this is very soft and approachable. Nice cherry fruit interspersed with earthiness. Likely a product of the vintage, so its approachability may not indicate how well it ages. Still, I would drink these sooner as its where it should be for now. Quite enjoyable.

  • 2011 Regusci Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District 87 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Stags Leap District

Purple in color. The nose has cassis, bell pepper and a thick streak of celery. Everything I don't like about the downside of many 11's (there are some very good ones). On the palate, the texture is quite good. Some cassis, but the celery/green streak pervades the mid-palate. Certainly worth drinking and food helps. Perhaps with age it develops more, but tonight, its just not what I like in cabs. And while I didn't buy it, I am sure it is not cheap.

  • 2004 Beaulieu Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon Georges de Latour Private Reserve 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Always a pleasure to drink this wine. Purple/ruby in color. On pop and pour, the nose is difficult with lots of dust. With just a few minutes of air, it shows cassis, cedar and dust. It gets deeper and the oak integrates with time. On the palate, this is more elegant than a big wine. Nice cassis fruit with some oak. It seems mature, but I would give it some time gently in a decanter to open. Really enjoyable wine that is more Bordeaux style of Napa cabs.

  • 2012 Nine North Wine Company Cabernet Sauvignon Twenty Bench 86 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Always nice to try an inexpensive Napa Cab that delivers for the price. This is not a block buster, but this provides a pleasant true cab experience. Purple in color. The nose has cassis, some oak and some vanilla. On the palate, this is easy to drink. No faults or problems, if nothing truly exciting here. No complexity or depth. At under $20 though, it was just fine.

  • 2000 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

I continue to admit that I was wrong about the 2000 Napa Cabs. At least the better ones. While I did not like them on release, I have had a bunch in the last few years that really developed well and this is one of them. Its drinks now like a beautiful cab getting close to peak but with a long life ahead if well stored. The nose has cassis, slight tobacco, some cherries and slight minty note. Very light tannins. Lots of complexity on the palate. Plenty of fruit left too. Long finish. Beautiful wine.

  • 2014 Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Noir Whole Cluster Willamette Valley 87 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Always a decent value from an Oregon Pinot (around $20 IIRC). This is nice if simple. Cherries on the nose and palate. Not super ripe but not green. Ready to drink now.

  • NV Warre Porto Warrior 85 Points

    Portugal, Douro, Porto

A nice finish to the day. With cigars outside. Nothing complex here, but a nice bit of not over the top sweetness. Nice texture. Raspberry and cherry candy. Easy.
