Introduction

Old friends catching up for a boozy Saturday Lunch

Flight 1 - A bit of a fizzer (1 Note)

Flight 2 - Classic Chablis! (2 Notes)

  • 2002 Vincent Dauvissat (René & Vincent) Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

This bottle was in great condition. Had a beautiful understatement, light on its feet with richness of maturity. This was some kind of wine and then some. So well balanced, great acid keeping everything together a stunning Chablis and drinking beautifully now. Wine of the day for most.

  • 2003 Domaine Louis Michel Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

Was really hard up against it being next to the Dauvissat from 02 and the warmer vintage characteristics showed a little bit. Had lovely palate weight with a touch of harshness due to the warmer conditions of 03 I suspect. Not the refinement either but overall still pretty pleasant and might have scored higher if not next to the stunning aforementioned wine which was brilliant.

Flight 3 - Cote de Beaune representative (1 Note)

  • 2007 Arnaud Ente Meursault Clos des Ambres 90 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

Pretty good wine but followed a classic Grand Cru Chablis and putting things into perspective I have to say this would have been even better on its own. An excellent village wine with richness of the village making a slightly heavier imprint to be expected from the Cote de Beaune. Very good.

Flight 4 - A couple of ripping Burgundies (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Armand Rousseau Père et Fils Clos de la Roche 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru

Lovely wine all silk and lace, very Rousseau. Very spice driven aroma with beautiful breadth and detail shows the oak a touch. Like inhaling a spring breeze it goes down so effortlessly. Maybe not the most complex Clos de La Roche I've seen from Rousseau but still a liquid work of art. Maybe 94 a bit generous but an extra point for being so damn drinkable!

  • 2012 Alain Hudelot-Noëllat Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru Les Suchots 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Vosne-Romanée 1er Cru

Very bright sheen to this at the moment and some gorgeous fruit there is too. Showing a bit more oak than I would like and maybe this comes together with time but they don't always do they? Very drinkable now but of course it's still an infant. Maybe scores higher with time and plenty of upside to this wine as it's quite pretty but raw.

Flight 5 - Majestic Cornas (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Auguste Clape Cornas 95 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

Not from a great year but this was a brilliant wine. Dark, brooding, full of character and classic Cornas with trademark tannins. Old school.

  • 2006 E. Guigal Côte-Rôtie Château d'Ampuis 82 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

I must admit I've never fallen in love with this wine from any vintage. Oaky, showy, new world like shiraz with bugger all character. Rubbish but loads love it?

  • 2011 Domaine Jamet Côte-Rôtie 92 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Côte-Rôtie

Wow this was an impenetrable wine at the moment. Only with time did it start to show any of the detail beyond the vice like grip of the tannins. It's there but this is a beast of a wine which needs time to soften and express the things which make Jamet's great. I wouldn't say tough as old boots but the wine isn't very welcoming at this stage. Good to see it's old school though as the last more recent Jamet I had was very ripe and Jammy and I think this could develop into a classic. Give it time and don't drink on its own as we did.

  • 2010 Jean Foillard Morgon Côte du Py 89 Points

    France, Burgundy, Beaujolais, Morgon

Not bad but a bit grubby (slightly bretty) certainly not enough to be a wasted wine but it does suffer a bit as the palate is more rustic than it perhaps should have been. A bottle had at the end of the day too.

Closing

France Soir is a Melbourne institution and I've never had a bad experience. Always great and if you concentrate hard enough you can picture yourself in Beaune on holiday. A great day!
