Introduction

Fun tasting at this historic and ancient estate. The visit starts at the Marcarini wine shop in La Morra and proceeds out the wine shop back door to the family's estate. Fun to walk through the ancient cask room and see/smell the history with the 2013 and 2014 vintages aging away. After the short tour we proceeded back up to the wine shop to taste through the range. I was uninspired by the non-Barolo offerings which were just nice and on the simpler side. The two Barolos were the star of the show and I'm a buyer of the 2011s based on this sampling. Also worth noting that the tasting/tour was available on a Sunday which is quite rare in Piedmont.

  • 2011 Marcarini Barolo La Serra 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Youthful, feminine nose has black cherry and flowers. Palate is medium bodied with significant acid and tannic structure that clamps down the palate. Needs time. More demure than the Brunate tasted side-by-side. 90-92

  • 2011 Marcarini Barolo Brunate 93 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Yum, dark cherry and tar on the nose. Much bigger and bolder aromatics than the La Serra tasted side-by-side. Medium to full bodied and substantial. Has the stuffing to age but showing nicely already. 92-94
