Showed very little on the nose, with faint lime and slate. Light body. Mostly lime and lime pith on the palate, with grassy/herbal notes and a steely finish. Meh.
Medium tawny, with a very dark-fruited, smoky, animal nose, but also surprisingly a bit of savory ("old wine") sourness. On the palate, red and black fruit, herbal, green, animal, but well delineated and clean. Fairly light body; medium grippy tannin. Good length. My #3 of the night, slightly ahead of the group's consensus.
Tricky Mr. B served two halves of a magnum in two separate flights paired with Burgundy. Happily, I had nearly identical (tepid) notes for both, with the two ending up my 7th and 8th wines of the night. Medium-plus tawny color. Brooding nose of dark (stewed?) fruit, surprisingly advanced on the nose; a bit heady, ripe. Some sourness on the palate. Meh.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambolle-Musigny
Medium ruby, almost purple color. Light intensity, elegant nose. Red berries, perfume, flowers Chambolle! Silky, but with a backbone. Light body, with delicate red fruit on the palate and a touch of fruit sweetness into the (subtle but long) finish. Easily my wine of the night, and group's number 1.
Light lemon color. Lime, lemon. Very young and primary with a bit of spritz. Lemon and apple, with well balanced, light sweetness. 09? Surprising, as this is more elegant than exuberant. My#4 of the night.
Alongside the Kreuznacher Krötenpfuhl, this was slightly outclassed by the elegance (thought the group thought the reverse). More green apple and pear; sweeter, though still well balanced. Young and primary, so I imagine I will enjoy this a lot more in five/ten years.
Very cold, with muted aroma initially. Quite rich, with tropical fruit, apricot/peach, and some lime pith. Very little sweetness, but also little balance for the richness. My least favorite wine of the night (group's 9 of 10).
Served alongside the "Cuvee Mathilde" which made this wine stand out for the better acidity, better overall acid, and longer finish. Ripe, tropical, but (unlike Mathilde) not overly heavy. Okay, but tough to judge after the Donnhoff wines.
Guava and stone fruit on the nose. Very rich and sweet, but not at all cloying, with awesome acidity. Well balanced, with a palate of citrus, green fruit, pineapple, guava. Medium length, with a finish of sweet, dried tropical fruit and tart lemon. Yummy. My (and group's) #2 of the night.
