This was a superb showing for its age. Dark fruits, licorice and smoke. Lots of weight on the palate and a lively, focused finish. Lovely wine.

Perhaps a bit past peak, but still providing some pleasure. Dried currants, beets and celery seed. A bit clipped on the finish but well balanced on the palate with nice mature characteristics.

A fabulous wine that showed great poise and vigor for its age. Robust and full of life; rich and almost youthful. The tannins are fine and smooth. Outstanding wine.

Seemed a bit mute at first, but as time went on, this showed itself to be corked.

A nice, elegant, restrained, svelte Cabernet, but definitely mature, with copious secondary notes. Medium bodied, with nice dried floral notes on the finish.

A bit cloudy, but this was probably due to being shaken up as it was hand carried to the restaurant. The color is a ruby, garnet with a rusty rim. The fruit has dried a bit but this was not dead. Very mature but still a joy to drink with lots of earth, dried fruit and dried floral notes. The tannins have melted away but the acids keep this balanced and alive. Past peak but still wonderful.

Youthful but not overly tannic. Such a joy to drink, with a great concentration of primary fruit and spice. This has so much more to give and I wish I could taste this again in another 20 years. So much strength here... one of the classics from this great California vintage.

Such a serious, deep wine, still holding a core of dense fruit, with an old-world profile of graphite, cedar, sage and earth. So layered, so alive and seemingly still has more to give. This bottle was in superb condition and the contents really showed it.

This displace some cinnamon and other spice notes, but the fruit was almost non-existent. This seemed brothy, stewed, lactic and had hint of volatile acidity. A flawed bottle.

A beautiful wine, showing lots of old-world elegance. Currants, licorice, earth and cedar. Drinking great, but the finish was slightly clipped.

Surprisingly youthful and monolithic, with very little development. This must have been a superbly well-stored bottle. With air, this gained more layers, with hints of herbs and spice. As the night wore on, this gained plushness and opulence. Wow, this could really be something down the road.

Excellent Sauternes that shows correct development for its age. Honey and dried tropical fruits. Rich and sweet, but the 1988 acids are there to keep this in balance. This still has some oak to resolve, but the components are there to keep this alive for many years to come.

Given the producer and the vintage, I was expecting something fat, gloppy and syrupy, but this was in balance and delicious. Definitely sweet, with white raisins, dried peach and dried pineapple flavors, but ... the finish was lengthy and fairly crisp. A nice surprise.

Honey, quince and tropical notes. Sharp, crisp and a bit lean; a lot of the sugar seems to have melted away as this was only mildly sweet. A nice wine that did get better with air, but I recall having better bottles of this. I liked it, but others liked it more than I did, as I found it a bit severe.

Fantastic showing, with a complex bend of flavors, such as baked apple, lemon peel, petrol, minerals and baked peaches. Seeming round in the mouth with nice buffering sap, but the acids really mop up the richness. Very clean and precise with an enduring, lip-pursing, acidic bite. Fabulous.

Something was not right here. Very mature and an almost earthy "dirty" note. Not horrible, but not right.

Such a stunning performance. This was fresh, focused, citric, youthful and loaded with minerality. This really expands on the palate, where it clings for dear life, refusing to dissipate. Linear, powerful, bright and shimmering... like drinking diamonds. Wow.
