Introduction

Interesting session with many different styles of wine from different countries of origin,

Flight 1 (7 Notes)

  • 1983 Chateau Musar 90 Points

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
Nose is clean (no brett here), medium intensity, with aromas of earth, sweet spices, red cherries, slight soy sauce with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (14%), fully integrated medium- tannins, medium body. Medium flavour intensity, with flavours of cola, sweet spices, sweet red cherries, slight earth. Medium- finish.
Very good quality. This tasted more like an aged New World Pinot Noir than a Cabernet Sauvignon, Cinsault, Carignan blend!
Drink up now. This is already on a decline with intensity dropping.

  • 2007 Olivier Bernstein Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Les Cazetiers 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter. Drank over 3 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of wood spice, earth, dark red cherries, meatiness, and bacon with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium+ tannins, medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of wood spice, earth, dark red cherries, dark red plums, meat. Long finish.
However, this wine deteriorated with air, and after the 2+ hours, the nose became soapy and palate lost focus.
Very good quality. Drink up over next 2 years. I don't think this is a particularly long-ager. That said, it is good, and probably as good as it gets already.
    I guessed a 10 year old Gevrey-Chambertin premier cru.

  • 2005 Favia Cerro Sur 96 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Poured into decater and aired for an hour before drinking over the next 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of sweet baking spices, sweet vanilla, cinnamon, mint, eucalyptus, purple blackcurrant "Hacks" sweets, licorice. More blackcurrant and slight cedar with more air. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, high alcohol (14.8%!) but no heat/burn at all, silky smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet baking spices, vanilla, cinnamon, mint, eucalyptus, licorice, blackberries, black cherries, blackcurrant. Slight cedar with more air. Long finish.
Outstanding quality. Drinking well now and still going strong. Drink till 2020 easily.
Predominantly Cabernet Franc with some Cabernet Sauvignon. The best Cabernet Franc dominant wine I have drank so far. And I can't believe that I can actually say that a wine with such pronounced intensity nose and palate can be elegant, but this is!
From the power couple Andy Erickson and Annie Favia who work with Screaming Eagle, and some of Napa's other brightest star wineries.

  • 1986 Château Talbot 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Tasted blind. Apparently slow-oxed in bottle for 3 hours and drank over the next 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, garnet colour. Legs.
Nose is not clean, ,medium+ intensity, with pungent barnyard and animal poop. With swirling in the glass, some of it blows off, to reveal other scents of graphite, tobacco, earth, and slight bell pepper with more air. Developed.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium alcohol (12.5%), integrated fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of graphite, tobacco, leather, dark plums, prunes. Long finish.
Very good quality. Looking beyond the brettiness, this wine does have good structure. Must have been very muscular and brawny when it was younger. Fruit is drying up now. Drink up.
I don't really drink Bordeaux all that much, but from the depths of my wine palate memory, this felt like a familiar aged St. Julien to me.

  • 2000 Clarendon Hills Astralis 95 Points

    Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, Clarendon

Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Drank over 1.5 hours.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with aromas of sweet corn, blackberry jam, blackcurrant, black cherry liqueur. Developing.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, high alcohol (15%), smooth medium+ tannins, full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of sweet corn, licorice, cassis, black cherry liqueur, blackcurrant, blackberry jam. Long finish.
Outstanding quality. The complexity and big structure made me think this was an Aussie Shiraz-Cabernet Sauvignon blend. Still going strong. Enjoy over the next 4-5 years.

  • 1997 Antinori Tignanello 93 Points

    Italy, Tuscany, Toscana IGT

Tasted blind. Poured into decanter and drank over 1 hour.
Appearance is clear, deep intensity, ruby colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium intensity, with aromas of scented wood, dark red cherries, blackberries, sweet spices. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol, fine high tannins, full body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of blackcurrant, blackberries, black cherries, dark red cherries, sweet spices. Long finish.
I guessed this was a 10 year old SuperTuscan.
Very good quality. Initially very tight, this needed to be coaxed out in the decanter before showing. Still feels like this could age another 3-4 years well. No hurry to drink up for me, fruits still kicking here. But unlikely to improve much further.
80% Sangiovese, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon for this vintage.
