Introduction

Every participant had to bring a wine of the theme. We did not know which wines were brought by the others. All wines were tasted blind, also without knowing when the wine you brought was poured.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Château Paveil de Luze 87 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Beautiful, slightly evolved bouquet with cassis, cherries and a touch of chocolate. On the palate cassis and other dark berry fruits, cherries again, some vanilla, good acidity and bitterness. The tannin is still youthful, but overall this is a light style of wine; elegant and with a good length.

  • 2007 Château Siran 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dark and red berries in the bouquet, also bell pepper, autumn and graphite and good oak. On the palate dark fruits, reticent, some bell pepper, round but sticky tannin with a good bite. Overall a good wine, especially for the vintage. Needs a few more years of ageing to be more harmonious.

  • 2000 Château Siran 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Special bouquet with very ripe fruits, some bell pepper, graphite and a good dose of oak. On the palate ripe, mainly dark berry fruits, good acidity and a bit drying and still sticky tannin. Also some bell pepper. Good concentration. Fairly complex but more straight forward than refined. Will probably improve with another 3+ years of ageing, so around 2017.

Flight 3 (3 Notes)

  • 2000 La Sirène de Giscours 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Beautiful bouquet with ripe cassis, some smoke, graphite and also a creamy impression. On the palate the wine starts with red fruits, then black fruits, licorice root, tobacco, cedar and some chocolate. Good acidity and soft tannin and bitterness. Pleasant wine. Ready now and the coming year. Do not wait too long.

  • 2004 Château Pontac-Lynch 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

The color shows some evolution and is fairly light. In the bouquet good ripe fruits like cassis. Also some leather and oak. On the palate leather again, cassis, firm bell pepper, herbal and also some creaminess. Good acidity and drying tannin and bitterness. Overall a good wine, but the vintage is showing due to the lack of concentration.

  • 2003 Château Giscours 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Compared to the bottle earlier this year this was much better. Luxurious oak, ripe berry fruits and coffee in the bouquet. On the palate ripe red fruits, sweet spices, even minerals, vanilla and iodine. Good fresh acidity and tannin which is still sticky and showing a promise. Until 2018 no problem.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Château Ferrière 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits and beautiful oak. On the palate concentrated and soft juice with cassis, graphite, sweet licorice, chocolate and graphite. Good acidity and round tannin. I did not drink many Ferrière wines, but this vintage definitely is the best ever tasted. Already nice, but around 2020 almost certainly better.

  • 2007 Château du Tertre 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Garnet red with a little brown in the rim. Beautiful bouquet with smoke, tobacco and cassis, a bit rustic, but overall not extremely luxurious. On the palate red fruits, some bell peppers, mild acidity and tannin. Red fruits in the long finish. Certainly a very ok wine, but the vintage is showing. A bit green and too many red fruits for a good, left bank Bordeaux. Possibly a few more years in the bottle will help a bit. Around 2016?

  • 2005 Château du Tertre 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Beautiful already somewhat evolved bouquet with red fruits, chocolate and some lactic impressions. On the palate red as well as dark forest fruits, sweet spices, vanilla, chocolate again, firm acidity and round tannin. Juicy wine which is in its early maturity stage now and will probably improve for the better over the next 3+ years. Try again around 2017.

Flight 5 (2 Notes)

  • 2001 Château Prieuré-Lichine 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Smokey cassis bouquet with good oak, cedar, leather, tobacco and laurel. On the palate also cassis, other dark forest fruits, laurel and smoke. Good acidity and round and soft, but also firm tannin with a good bite. Good concentration and a long finish. Really good wine. Young maturity stage now and with a future of at least 4+ years.

  • 1999 Château Marquis de Terme 89 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

The bouquet has the classical Bordeaux flavors and also something vegetal and green, animals and rustic impressions in the bouquet. On the palate not extremely concentrated, a bit green again, red and black fruits, some salty licorice, chocolate and minerals. Overall a complex and elegant wine, but not showing the finesse and concentration of the really great wines. Is in a perfect drinking stage now and that is the reason for the relatively high score. Will stay on this level for some more years.

  • 2005 Château Brane-Cantenac 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Beautiful bouquet with luxurious oak, dark forest fruits and some herbs and spiciness. On the palate juicy dark and also some red forest fruits and some chocolate and mint. Good acidity and round and elegant tannin. Early maturity now and around 2017 probably a bit better. 91+

  • 2005 Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Beautiful and deep bouquet with very luxurious oak and good cassis. Also some youthful lactic impressions. On the palate mainly dark and also some red forest fruit, vanilla and round tannin which becomes more and more sticky after the wine gets more airtime. It is probably wise to give this wine more cellar time until approx 2020.

In the bouquet dark forest fruits, smoke and gun powder. On the palate beautiful dark berry juice, sweet spices, licorice, chocolate and gun powder again. Good acidity and round but still powerful tannin. Good length. Beautiful wine, but wait until 2020 at least. 91+
