Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted blind.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2009 Zoltán Demeter Hárslevelű Szerelmi 87 Points

    Hungary, Tokaji

Perfumed bouquet. Yellow fruits, concentrated, spiciness, dry honey, some nuts like almond, some limestone minerality. Full bodied a bit fat, rich and tasty. Pleasantly dry. A very nice Hungarian wine.

  • 2009 Olivier Merlin Bourgogne 79 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Special and not particularly pleasant bouquet; hints of cherry yoghurt, bretty and some minerals. This bouquet is the best part. On the palate a bit unfriendly and drying tannin. Out of balance and a short finish.

  • 2010 Domaine Bernard Defaix Bourgogne 83 Points

    France, Burgundy, Bourgogne

Fruit yoghurt in the bouquet, some cherries, earthy notes and minerals as well. On the palate cherries, raspberries, some minerals, a lot of acidity, bitterness and sticky tannin. Not an easy pleaser. Very basic, but still ok basic Burgundy.

Flight 2 (2 Notes)

Flight 3 (2 Notes)

  • 2010 André Perret Condrieu Chery 87 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Condrieu

Fresh bouquet with blossom, bananas and apricots. Quite intense in the bouquet, a lot of bananas, aromatic, white pepper, well integrated oak and a bit fat. The wine probably needs a few more years of ageing. 87 for now.

  • 2010 Domaine de l'Oratoire St Martin Cairanne Blanc Haut-Coustias 85 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Cairanne

In the bouquet ripe yellow fruits and some smoke. On the palate bananas, ripe apples, limestone minerals, tart pineapple and tart apple acidity as well. Little bitterness in the finish. Served cold the wine has some elegance, but when the temperature rises it becomes a bit plump.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine de Marotte Ventoux Cuvée Niels 82 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Ventoux

The bouquet is still a bit locked and on the palate it is the same. There are some red as well as dark cherries, juicy, mild acidity and round tannin with some bite. Easy going, basic wine.

  • 2010 Domaine Font Santé Vacqueyras 85 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras

Bouquet with red as well as black berries, herbs and spices and cherry yoghurt. On the palate a lot of cherries and medium ripe blackberries, garrigue, bell pepper and a touch of oak. There is a lot of fresh acidity and tannin as well as some bitterness in the finish. Correct wine, but not extremely interesting.

  • 2010 Xavier Vignon Côtes du Rhône 85 Points

France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Côtes du Rhône

The bouquet is still a bit reticent. On the palate a sweet start followed by cherries and red berry fruits, some minerality and the alcohol shows a bit. Probably wise to wait a few years.

Flight 5 (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine le Sang des Cailloux Vacqueyras Cuvée Doucinello 88 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Vacqueyras

Beautiful bouquet which shows a little development and some complexity; rustic, red as well as dark fruits, truffle as well as some spices and perfume. On the palate juicy fruits, beautiful acidity and good tannin with still a bite. The alcohol shows a bit.

  • 2008 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

In the bouquet some barnyard, red fruits, herbs and a lot of sweet spices. On the palate a slightly sweet start, ripe red fruits, garrigue, white pepper and flint stone. The tannin is supple and there is a firm amount of fresh acidity. Fruity wine with a soft and pleasant mouth feel. Already nice and a future at least until 2016.

  • 2005 Berard Père et Fils Gigondas Cuvée Prestige 84 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

In the bouquet some sweetness, celery, tobacco and garrigue, but also still some fruitiness. On the palate juicy, some roasted impressions, soft tannin and just a hint of oxidation. The wine is still nice, but this bottle is slowly on its way down. Drink very soon.

Flight 6 (2 Notes)

  • 1982 Berard Père et Fils Châteauneuf-du-Pape Cuvée Prestige

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape

Light brown color. Tea, rust, tobacco and leather in the bouquet. On the palate tea and rust as well. Reductive flavors, celery, old age acidity and some sweetness. This wine is completely over the hill. But…..you can look at this another way as well; if you like the oxidized style e.g. several Jura wines or Madeira, then you probably love this…… Imho this wine is not meant to be drunk in this stage of its life. I don't score it.

  • 2006 J.L. Chave Sélection Hermitage Farconnet 89 Points

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Hermitage

Beautiful and complex bouquet with some sweetness, minerals, spiciness and ripe Syrah grapes. On the palate juicy, ripe black fruits, minerals and spiciness. Gripping tannin. Well balanced and nice wine. Will probably improve a bit over the next 3 or 4 years.
