Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2009 Grace Winery Koshu 86 Points

    Japan, Chūbu, Yamanashi, Katsunuma

Tasted blind. From 360ml bottle. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Thin legs.
Nose is clean, medium- intensity, with aromas of white flowers and mild honey. Developed.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium- alcohol (12%), medium- body. Medium- flavour intensity, with flavours of citrus lemon-lime, slight honey, and hints of some kind of minerality. Interestingly, a long bittersweet finish.
Hard to place a guess on any specific grape varietal.
Good quality I suppose, but not enough substance and body to impress. A light picnic kind of wine. Drink up already, before the fruit dies.

  • 2010 Domaine François Cotat Sancerre Les Monts Damnés 94 Points

France, Loire Valley, Upper Loire, Sancerre

Wax-sealed top. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon-yellow colour. Legs. Some very fine fizz seen.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of saline minerality, rocky minerality, lemon drops, citrus yellow oranges. Showed many facets over the course of the 2 hours, showing honeyed candy, yellow flowers, and orangy tangerines with more air. Developing. Highly complex.
On the palate, dry, very high but balanced acidity, medium alcohol (13.5%), medium+ body. Some fizziness on the palate. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of lemon drops, citrus lime, yellow oranges, saline minerality, rocky minerality, slight honey, and bitter orange peel. Long finish.
Outstanding quality Sauvignon Blanc. Nicely ripe fruit with loads of minerality. Body on the fuller side but so easy to drink.
Still very fresh. Drink and enjoy over the next 5+ years as it evolves. Who knows, this might even survive 10+ years. What a hero Francois Cotat is.
Very traditional, non-interventionist approach, barrel-fermenting the juice in old demi-muids using natural yeasts. Wines apparently racked according to the phases of the moon?!

  • 2012 Kenzo Estate Sauvignon Blanc Asatsuyu 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasted blind. From 375ml bottle. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, lemon colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, pronounced intensity, with in-your-face aromas of exotic fruits - rambutans, lychees, mangoes, candied peaches, and rocky minerality. Youthful.
On the palate, dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.2%), full body. Pronounced flavour intensity, with flavours of an Asian fruit stall - rambutans, lychees, mangoes, candied peaches, sweet creaminess, and some rocky minerality. Long finish.
This had me thinking Gewurztraminer right from the start to the end. What the heck?! How does Sauvignon Blanc smell and taste like that?!
Objectively, it is a very well-made and enjoyable bottle of wine and I like it. Drink up over next 2 years. Not enough acidity to balance the full body for extended ageing. Regular sized bottles might last longer.
Aged 6 months in 30% French oak and 70% stainless steel.

  • 2013 Kenzo Estate Yui 88 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Drank over 2 hours.
Appearance is clear, pale intensity, salmon pink colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of strawberries, raspberry, red cherries, watermelon juice. Youthful.
On the palate, medium-dry, medium+ acidity, medium+ alcohol (14.2%), medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of strawberries, raspberry, red cherries, watermelon juice. Medium+ finish. All about fresh red fruits here.
Good quality Rose. Quite a bit of heft on the palate, but I would have preferred more acidity to balance the sweetness of it. Drink up soon. Overpriced Rose.
Actually not a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. It also has Cabernet Franc and Merlot, and maybe Malbec.

  • 2009 Domaine Arretxea Irouléguy Hegoxuri 89 Points

France, Southwest France, Pays Basque, Irouléguy

Tasted blind. Pop and poured. Drank over 45 mins.
Appeaance is clear, pale intensity, yellow-gold colour. Legs.
Nose is clean, medium+ intensity, with aromas of saline minerality, stony minerality, citrus lemon. Developing.
On the palate, dry, high acidity, medium+ alcohol (13.5%), Medium+ body. Medium+ flavour intensity, with flavours of salty saline minerality, stony minerality, sour citrus lemon. Medium+ finish.
Some kind of rustic, unpolished feel to this wine. Has the profile of a good village Chablis, but has a bit more weight than that.
Good quality. In my opinion, does not have the finesse to join the 90 point white wine club though. An educational wine.
55% Gros Manseng, 38% Petit Manseng, remainder 7% Petit Corbu I think.
