Introduction

A bit of wet day that ultimately turned very nice. There were a number of really nice wines today. Thanks to all for sharing your treasures. It is always appreciated.

Flight 1 (8 Notes)

  • 2000 Charles Ellner Champagne Brut Prestige 92 Points

    France, Champagne

Light medium gold color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour. Ah, my old friend, alas we must part ways. It has been a most pleasant journey over these 5 years. I've enjoyed your bright green apple nose, minerals and yeast. You've consistently been a graceful and crisp friend; with your sparkling personality, pear, citrus and zestiness not going unnoticed. Sometimes you were a tad more chalky than I prefer, but as we come the end, you were just right again. I'll now be forced to seek solace in your younger sibling. RIP my friend.

  • 2011 Stolpman Roussanne L'Avion 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Light gold color. Drank 1+ glass over 30 minutes. This was quite impressive. White fruits, melon, spice, oak, lime on the nose. The palate has a nice full body and rich texture, white nectarine, melon, oak, great depth of flavor. A fun wine and a glass I found myself going back to repeatedly.

  • 2005 Dr. Loosen Erdener Treppchen Riesling Auslese 94 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Medium gold color. Drank 2 glasses over an hour plus. Always a great bottle, this was spot on again. In fact, it was my WOTN. This such a pretty fruit profile with excellent ripeness but brilliant balancing acidity. Never does this come off as too sweet. The nose has a decent bit of fusil to start that gradually wanes but never leaves, pineapple, peach, apple and white flowers abound on the nose and palate. It is the acidity that grabs you though, crisp and fresh, dancing on the palate. Great finish. 94+pts.

  • 2004 La Rioja Alta Rioja Viña Ardanza Reserva 92 Points

Spain, La Rioja, La Rioja Alta, Rioja

Dark red color. Splash double decanted; drank 2 glasses over 2 hours plus. Pretty nose with dill, red cherry, dust and earth. The palate is equally enticing with dill, red fruit, earth, minerals, medium body, integrating tannins, and a long finish.

  • 2010 Croze Cabernet Sauvignon XV Anniversary Cuvée 93 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley, Rutherford

Very dark red purple color. PNP, drank 2 glasses over 2-3 hours. The nose is ripe but restrained, a nice nice of fruit, cassis, plum, red berries, spice and pepper. The palate is full bodied, but not heavy, tart red and black fruits, some earth late, a little alcohol at time, long finish. Impressive for it approachability and bright and forward but restrained style. Nice, my #3 WOTN. 92+ to 93 pts.

  • 2012 Caymus Cabernet Sauvignon Special Selection

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Black, and I mean black color - one of the darkest wines i can recall. PNP, drank 1 glass over 2 hours. Incredibly ripe, overripe, framboise, blackberry liqueur, chocolate, kir. The palate is about as high octane as it gets, overripe, port-like, sweet black fruits, vanilla, raisin, blackberry liqueur, glycerin, chocolate sauce. Hedonistic, rich and primary, the definition of a fruit bomb. I'd have not pegged this for cab, maybe a ripe Aussie shiraz, Amarone, or a young Port. Just not my style and very hard for me to wrap my head around. No doubt this appeals to a great number of people and they will score it very highly. I'll keep my score to myself. I found it interesting to read RP's tasting note which was spot on and clearly warns of the style - we just disagree on what that translates to. A polarizing wine. Caveat emptor. Very glad to have had the opportunity to try this - I will say it is approachable now in the style that it is. Curious to see what this would be like at 15 years or so, but I won't hold my breath.

  • 2004 Château Montrose 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Very dark red-purple color. Slow-O for 3 hours and splash double decanted. Drank 2 glasses over 2 hours. It was fun to check in on this after about 2 years. Really showing nicely now. Love the nose, classic, funk - most of which blows off, earthy, dust, pencil lead, cassis, saddle leather. The palate is full bodied, good concentration, plenty of black fruits, cassis, dark raspberry, a little plum, mineral, pencil, leather, earth, round tannins, long finish. Delicious. My #2 WOTN.

  • 2006 Marjan Simčič Leonardo 82 Points

    Slovenia, Primorska, Goriška Brda

Very deep amber color - advanced. Tasted from 375ml. Lots of orange on the nose and palate, honeyed texture, but very cloyingly sweet. Candied. Nothing to balance that sweetness. Hard to drink after the '01 De Malle Sauternes which was very nice again on day 2.
