Introduction

We knew the theme, but all wines were tasted fully blind.

Flight 1 (3 Notes)

  • 2014 Julien Schaal Chardonnay Evidence 88 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Elgin

Expressive bouquet with flowers, yellow fruits like pineapple and peach, some white fruits, citrus and a firm dose of oak. On the palate pineapple, a lot of lemon and lime impressions, including their acidity, full bodied and even a bit fat. Some bitterness in the finish. Concentrated wine. Can last a few years.

  • 2013 Morin Pere & Fils Meursault 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

The bouquet is still a bit locked but shows some white and yellow fruits, some creaminess and anise in the beginning. On the palate not very expressive, but there are white fruits, green apples, limestone minerals, a light dose of oak and ok citrus acidity. A wine with some finesse and which probably needs another year or two in the bottle.

  • 2011 Domein de Wijngaardsberg Chardonnay 88 Points

    Netherlands, Limburg, Ulestraten

In the bouquet white and yellow fruits as well as some minerals like flint stone. On the palate yellow fruits like pineapple, some white fruits as well, lemon and lime. Good acidity. Definitely a very pleasant surprise for a wine from the Netherlands and I am much more positive compared to two years ago.

Flight 2 (3 Notes)

  • 2008 Domaine Philippe Charlopin Marsannay Les Echezots 88 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Marsannay

See also my note from February. I can add to the bouquet flint stone, matches, a touch of barnyard and iodine. On the palate red and dark berries and gunpowder/fireworks. Ok acidity and slightly sticky tannin. Definitely a fairly complex wine with many impressions, but I still think everything has to integrate a bit more. Nevertheless a score this time; 87 – 88+?.

  • 2013 Maycas Del Limari Pinot Noir Reserva Sumaq 87 Points

    Chile, Limarí Valley

In the bouquet red berries, blackberries, minerals, smoke, smoke and geranium. On the palate a sweet start of ripe red berries, cherries, raspberry yoghurt, herbs, some pepper, good acidity and slightly sticky, round tannin. Quite open and fruit forward and the touch of sweetness helps that this is an easy to like wine.

  • 2011 Newton Johnson Pinot Noir Family Vineyards 89 Points

South Africa, Cape South Coast, Walker Bay, Upper Hemel-en-Aarde Valley

Very light and transparent garnet color. In the bouquet a lot of toasted oak, smoke, minerals and also some clove. On the palate the impressions of the bouquet return, there are also some red berries, good acidity and pleasant, slightly sticky tannin which is a bit drying in the finish. Good length. Really good and certainly if you like this style. 88 – 89.

Flight 4 (3 Notes)

  • 2012 Urla Şarapçılık Vourla 88 Points

    Turkey, Ege Bölgesi

Beautiful bouquet with dark forest fruits, good oak, some smoke, earth, laurel and licorice. On the palate juicy and ripe dark berries, some leather, vanilla, licorice of all sorts, green herbs, mild acidity and round tannin. Really nice wine and probably one of the best Turkish wines I ever had.

  • 2006 Château du Tertre Flawed

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

After revealing what we had in the glass I am certain we had a faulty (or mistreated) bottle, because the wine was much more developed than it should be. I made some blind notes: In the bouquet dark berries, celery, soy, autumn impressions and animals. On the palate tertiary with sweet spices, chocolate, herbs, figs and coffee. Mild acidity and soft tannin. Not undrinkable and even pleasant in a way, but too far gone for a 2006 Du Tertre. No score.

  • 2009 Kanonkop Paul Sauer 91 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Stellenbosch, Simonsberg-Stellenbosch

Beautiful bouquet with ripe dark forest fruits, good oak and truffle. On the palate dark and red forest fruits, vanilla, chocolate, licorice, medium plus acidity and round, fairly soft tannin with still a good bite. Early maturity now and no problem cellaring this until 2020. 90 – 91

  • 2005 Torres Cabernet Sauvignon (Black Label) Mas La Plana 91 Points

    Spain, Catalunya, Penedès

In the bouquet dark forest fruits, licorice and vanilla. On the palate dark berries, vanilla, herbs and spices, licorice, chocolate, good acidity and fairly round, but still firm tannin. A mouth full. Beautiful and concentrated wine. Young maturity stage now, but this can easily last until 2020+. 91+

  • 2004 Boekenhoutskloof Cabernet Sauvignon Franschhoek 91 Points

South Africa, Coastal Region, Franschhoek Valley

In the bouquet dark forest fruits, leather, meaty, rustic and autumn impressions. On the palate dark berries, dark cherries, herbs, licorice, vanilla, chocolate, good acidity and mild tannin. A lovely wine which is ready now, but there is no real hurry. 90 – 91
