Pale. Wonderful lemon and floral notes along with brothiness and a bit of sulfur. Lighter weight to start, then some flesh as it develops. Ripping acidity snaps one to attention. Extremely young, fantastic promise.
Light yellow, not much deeper than the 2004 next to it, as if it had been locked in a time capsule. Tart citrus core, a whiff of sulfur, great salinity, and the hallmark Raveneau flesh surrounding this backbone of structure. Not a big wine but a paradigm of focus and intensity for its weight. Outstanding. Although this was my last bottle, I could see it easily going another 6 to 8 years. Is 2004 the last "real" Chablis vintage??
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru
Opened last night. Full red. Earth, iron, mint, and red fruit. Light to medium weight with a powerful core of ripe black cherry. Long, tannic, soil-inflected finish. Very young but its excellent potential is readily apparent. I like its Gevrey style.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Tasted blind. Light ruby. Almost chaptalized smelling ripe fruit, florally, spiciness, and some stems. Quite ripe, round entry of dark fruit and then jarring acidity. Big wine, not particularly mineral for Corton but still quite powerful. Disjointed in a way I have found some '98's to be.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Chambertin-Clos de Bèze Grand Cru
Light ruby. Menthol, iron, stemminess, gentle red fruit. Medium weight, sparkling acidity, great soil, outstanding savory complexity and length. Wonderful Gevrey Grand Cru which could still use 5 years to completely resolve itself.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Faded ruby. Peppery, stemmy aromatics. Light to medium weight. Not too severe, but still an essentially mineral wine with camphor and black fruit. Virile and tight at age 20.
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Grands-Echezeaux Grand Cru
Even ruby. Beautiful nose of Asian spice, strawberry, and hoisin. Medium weight with gradual addition of sap as it opened. Gentle sweetness of red fruit, a touch of herbs, not as stemmy as the other Grand Crus tonight, excellent acidity and length. Seductive wine that grew over time. Impressive freshness of fruit at this stage. Outstanding and consistent with my prior bottle.
