Introduction

In general the formula here is that the host sets a theme and every participant brings a wine of the theme. The host puts a few extra on the table. We taste all wines blind, knowing our own wines. We first taste a little bit in a random order. Then we decide together in which order the wines will be tasted again and after that reveal which wine it is. In this group we do not use spittoons, so the number of bottles is limited. We don’t empty the bottles, but leave the leftovers for the host to taste again the next day, or take home the bottle we brought.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 1975 Château Lagrange (Pomerol)

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

In the tertiary bouquet rust, blood, celery and soy. On the palate a nice surprise with chocolate, coffee, truffle, blood, rust and autumn impressions. There also is juicy acidity and still some pleasant and soft tannin. I don’t score the wine, but it was certainly still enjoyable.

  • 1999 Château Lafon-Rochet 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Beautiful and mature bouquet with still some dark fruits, cedar, tobacco, autumn impressions and a pleasant touch of barnyard. On the palate expressive and mature with still some red berries, sweet spices, mushrooms, autumn forest, a firm dose of juicy acidity and soft tannin. The wine is completely ready now and will not improve anymore. No extreme hurry drinking it either.

  • 2005 Château Rouget 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Creamy bouquet with red berry fruits, sweet spices, earth and a pleasant dose of oak. On the palate creamy red and dark forest fruits, licorice, chocolate, juicy and good acidity as well as round tannin with still a good bite. Full bodied wine entering its maturity stage now and there is plenty of future. Until 2022+ no problem.

  • 2005 Château Vray Croix de Gay 90 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Garnet rim. Beautiful, slightly developed bouquet with red and dark forest fruits and some chocolate and cinnamon. On the palate juicy red and dark berries, some currants, chocolate, well integrated oak, a pleasant touch of sweetness and beautiful acidity. Overall a harmonious wine with round tannin and ready now. It can last a few more years as well, but is not for the long haul. Really pleasurable now.

  • 2010 Château Vray Croix de Gay 92 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

In the bouquet dark forest fruits, cigar box, beautiful oak and graphite. On the palate ripe dark berries, beautiful acidity and round but sticky tannin. Overall a full bodied and youthful wine with complexity and finesse. Good length. I would like to taste this again around 2022.
