Richard Brazier of Ancient & Modern Wines ( http://www.ancientandmodernwines.co.uk/ ) presented a nice vertical of this historic estate.
The impressive side were the 80s we have to say.
2007 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 88 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Very different to any other Beaucastel we have tried over the years. Blind we would have said new world. Ripe, sweet, Jammy, lots of sweet ripe fruit on the palate, spicy, peppery, quite a bit of extract. Not sure if it was the very ripe 2007, maybe a slight change in style or just the fact of the fact they used more mouverde here but it felt this 2007 took an Australian vacation. Maybe it needs time but an 88 at best for now from us.
Last time we had this out of context wine was the 2003 La Mouline and generally with a few of the 2003s and properly, if we ever get to, this is how we feel with the 2009 Cos d'Estournel

2005 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 91 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
After the jammy 2007 we had before this was a happy return to the usual style of CdB. Very much a young wine, a touch on the restrained side, white pepper feel, firm, youthful, good fruit more classic in style. Very elegant and with a few more years this would be a great wine. 91-92 for now.

1998 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Having tried this wine before ( Papies 92-93) we felt that this was not true to form. Actually the first taste of it we had we felt it was flawed. Not sure what to make of it but on the evening it felt like an 86 at best. Will not rate here.

1988 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 80 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
The wine, assuming this is a characteristic bottle, felt old and way past its good days. The nose was okish but on the palate it had a touch of VA, thin and not pleasant. Was not flawed just not good. 80

1985 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Our and the groups WOTN by a long shot.
Bright, grippy, vibrant still. Very much alive and albeit a bit restrained on the nose it sung on the palate. Good level of fruit, light spicy, peppery, rustic in many ways but in a good way. Not earthy at all! Great wine. 93-94

1981 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Light peppery nose, bright and vibrant wine from start to finish and showed very little in terms of fading. Light earthy touch, good fruit, nice balance, light rustic feel but a very nice wine and testament to very good winemaking. 93

1979 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 89 Points
France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Châteauneuf-du-Pape
Touch of bret on the nose. In general the wine felt old and past its better days. Lacked fruit density, and was an ok wine but not in any way a great wine. Still interesting a kudos for making it so far. 88-89

1978 Château de Beaucastel Châteauneuf-du-Pape 93 Points

A great wine at almost 40yrs old. Bright and vibrant, with good density of fruit, almost had a rich feel to it, elegant, balanced. Light earthy touch and was very enjoyable. Solid and still holding strong. 93
