Introduction

We had Ommer's fab prime rib with red wine, plus various appetizers (salmon, sugar snap peas, sauteed mushrooms, Chayote cubes sauteed in garlic, grilled asparagus wrapped in prosciutto, lemon tart with raspberry, fruit and more), and all paired with wines.

Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2006 Reverie Cabernet Sauvignon Diamond Mountain 91 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Diamond Mountain

The first wine, to pair with the prime rib. It was less tannic than other bottles we've had, but still offered tasty notes of blackberry, red fruit, currant, plum and a touch of vanilla, plus some cedar and earth on the finish. An elegant drink and a lovely and mature wine. It paired well with the prime rib and also with the mashed potatoes. We paid $29 / bottle. Very good QPR at that price; the winery retail is $65 / bottle. They are aged in 100% small oak barrels and hand-crafted.

    Drink now with beef.

  • 1999 Ristow Estate Cabernet Sauvignon Quinta de Pedras 90 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Well, this magnum finally turned up, after being "lost" in our cellar for almost a decade! -- and just in time for a wine tasting meal with prime rib my friend was organizing. So I figured it was meant to be.

For a 1999 wine, I was surprised how tannic and youthful the wine drank. There were noticeable tannins in the finish, plus red fruit flavors cherry, cassis and currants, with a little plum and some cedar as well. The mid-palette was a touch hollow (vs. when I tasted the wine in 2006), and it did seem to have a strong taste on the finish. (My friend thought it had a formaldehyde flavor on the finish, although I didn't find any). It was an ok pairing with the prime rib, but not as good as the Reverie -- to me because it was too tannic for the prime rib. (I had originally tasted this wine with the Coravin, but thought it didn't that well, so I went on to the Reverie). It probably drank a little better a few years earlier, but still good today.

We received this bottle as a gift in 2006. The retail was between $60 - $100 / 750 ml bottle. We drank 1 750 ml bottle using the Coravin, saving the other half for later.

All the grapes are from the Ristow Estate’s Quinta de Pedras Vineyard, located on the eastern side of the Silverado Trail, just south of the Stags Leap District in the Napa Valley. This rocky hillside vineyard produces limited quantities of intensely flavored and complex Cabernet Sauvignon. Turns out the Ristow family (who are both growers and winemakers) stopped making this wine after the 2005 vintage (a winery named Pedras continued), and they sold the vineyard in 2013. This is all too bad, as I liked the Ristow wines.

Drink now. And don't lose bottles in the cellar for a decade!

  • 2010 Kynsi Pinot Noir Bien Nacido Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

I thought this was a great wine. It was quite showy and fruit-forward, with flavors of raspberry, cherry, and strawberry - plus some spice / allspice on the finish. It paired well with the baked sockeye salmon -- even the piece with the Trader Joe chili pepper spices -- and even better with the smaller piece seasoned with cumin and coriander. It was also a great (yet surprising) pairing with the sauteed sugar snap peas in garlic.

This was my first bottle of any Kynsi Pinot Noir. I am glad I have 2 more bottles of these (and some of the others, too). These were $21 / bottle on close-out: very good QPR for that price. I think the winery retail is $40 / bottle.

Drink now but these can age, too -- and might be even better with some more bottle age -- although I am sure these bottles won't survive long enough at our house, for that.

  • 2007 Tudor Pinot Noir Santa Lucia Highlands 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

I love how well this wine is drinking - still, for a 2007 wine from Santa Lucia. Notes of red fruit, cherry, dark fruit, touch of raspberry, earth and some funk. Lovely with the salmon and with the sugar snap peas as well.

We paid $10 / bottle on close-out ($14.42 delivered, including shipping and tax), and it is a terrific wine for that price. I wish I had bought a full case of it! I think the winery retail is $45+ / bottle for current vintages; $30 / bottle back in 2008-2010. Drink now with food.
