Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 1985 Taittinger Champagne Comtes de Champagne Rosé Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

    (3/11/2017)

Nose is fresh as ever, powdered sugar, strawberry, blood orange citrus, and some yeasty development. Good traces of smoke. Precise. On the palate this shows the age with nice development, but still delivers a super juicy citrus fruit core. Great effervescence as well. Thin smoke reduction over deliciously mature grapefruit. Excellent.

  • 1983 François Raveneau Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis Grand Cru

    (3/11/2017)

Surprisingly reductive, white rubber, saline, white asparagus. Some gooseberry too. Textured Chablis chalkiness is still here. This has more creaminess, roundness, and even a touch of fat, relative to the '89 a few months back. Perfect bottle.

  • 1991 Coche-Dury Meursault Les Rougeots 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault

    (3/11/2017)

Honeyed and herbal notes on top of a distinctively reductive Coche signature. Lemon pith. Sulphuric Brussels sprouts in a very positive way. Wow that is magnificent. This is also pure and floral. Honeycomb, saffron, and botrytis. Really lucked into a perfect bottle here.

  • 1988 Domaine Leflaive Bâtard-Montrachet 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru

    (3/11/2017)

Big Leflaive matchstick nose, struck match, egg white, candied lemon, and beautiful trace smoke. This is super clean up front and then expands into a rich, round, and full mid-palate. Plenty of maturing yellow tropical fruits in here too. After two hours of air this got super ripe, with big banana marshmallow scents and flavours. Excellent. Delicious. Really want more.

  • 1988 Domaine René Engel Clos Vougeot 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

    (3/11/2017)

Well this is super alive and vibrant. Serious punch of red cherry. This lead to a spirited debate regarding the Vosne-Clos-Vougeot boarder, and you can definitely appreciate a lot of vosne yeast and spice here. Young and fresh with a lot of cranberry. Great freshness and well-integrated acidity. Pure and concentrated cranberry throughout. Young, could have been confused for a '97 or good '96.

  • 1988 Domaine G. Roumier / Christophe Roumier Bonnes Mares 96 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

    (3/11/2017)

Incredible nose of blueberry, raspberry, and ripe blackberry. Distinct and developed terror. Wow that is spectacular. A particular earth-driven spice. Florals on the nose with big density on the palate. This bottle strikes as very fresh as well. Very textured palate that still has a kiss of tannin. Beets. Quite showy but very complex and intriguing.

  • 1991 Coche-Dury Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru

    (3/12/2017)

Hugely reductive nose that also shows sharp honey and pronounced lemon rind. Palate is initially a touch clipped and leaves something to be desired. Lemon meringue. Some saffron botrytis in here too. Oily. Really expanded and improves over three hours. Gains a fresh white mushroom quality. Even if its off-vintage, older bottles of this are still very special and delicious. The '91 Rougeots yesterday was bigger, younger, and more complete, but this was a beautiful mature white Burgundy.

  • 1986 Henri Jayer Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Aux Murgers 95 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

    (3/12/2017)

Incredible purity on the nose. Drying leathery cranberry and curious baking spice. Floury and baking soda for sure. Not overly gamey, but roast beef. This is super complex and intricate. Baking soda spritz on the palate initially, but blew off after the first glass. Dark cola spice and root beer. Trying to think back to that '86 Meo Meurgers a month or so ago, and the terroir is familiar, but this is more subtle and intriguing. Several hours later there is a real ketchup / roast tomato note here. Very special to say the least...

  • 1988 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune 92 Points

    France, Alsace

    (3/12/2017)

Perfect Trimbach Riesling nose, petrol and candied ginger botrytis. Apricot. Toasty, caramel, peach. The nose was sweet and floral but the palate was completely dry. Delicious drinking.

  • 1988 Domaine Dujac Clos St. Denis 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru

    (3/12/2017)

Robust whole cluster bouquet, very stalky with rosy florals. Quite energetic and hugely flavourful. Juicy red cherry on a very textured palate. Had this after an '86 Jayer Nuits Meurgers, which automatically makes this an unusual pairing, but this was unapologetically flashy and striking. Real success with '88s recently. This was a delicious bottle. Definitely want more.
