Introduction

This was a showcase of Arcadian wines across their portfolio.

Flight 1 (2 Notes)

  • 2008 Arcadian Chardonnay Sleepy Hollow Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Light medium gold color. Decanted 1 hour, drank a small glass over 20 minutes. Looking back on my previous note on this wine from 3 years ago, I find it quite consistent. Nice, with lemon, lemon oil, waxy, light oak that is nicely woven in, good length and texture.

  • 2010 Arcadian Chardonnay Clos Pepe Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Light gold color. Decanted 1 hour; drank a small glass over 20 minutes. Very similar in character to the '08 Sleepy Hollow drank prior, but a bit more vibrant and energetic. Lemon, oily, beeswax, full bodied, more mineral character here, some apple on the palate as well. Very good. 91+pts.

Flight 2 (4 Notes)

  • 2001 Arcadian Pinot Noir Fiddlestix Vineyard 87 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Medium red color. Two hour decant; followed a small glass over 30 minutes. The saving grace here is the nose, cherry, dried cherry, subtle earth and floral hints. The palate is tired with faded red fruit, woody, medium body. Perhaps would have been a bit better without the decant. 87+pts.

  • 2005 Arcadian Pinot Noir Dierberg Vineyard 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Medium dark red color. Two hour decant, drank 1 small glass over 20 minutes. This was the best of the four pinots we tried. Shows pleasant earth and raspberry, red currant nose. The medium plus bodied palate is more sour red fruits, red currant, sour raspberry, slightly herbal, pretty spicy with wood and heat showing on the back end. The palate is a bit klunky.

  • 2007 Arcadian Syrah Purisima Mountain Vineyard 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Dark red color. Decanted for 30 minutes, followed a small glass over 30 minutes. While this has some alcohol both on the nose and palate it does not overwhelm the wine. Earthy, medium full body, pepper, dark fruits, wood.

  • 2008 Arcadian Syrah Stolpman Vineyard 91 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Dark red color. Decanted for 1 hour; drank a small glass over 30 minutes next to the '04 Hommage a Max. This is very nice, dried earth, dark fruits, cassis, brambly, nice wood tones, well proportioned white pepper, medium full body, medium plus finish. Well done and showing well.

  • 2004 Arcadian Syrah Hommage à Max 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Ynez Valley

Dark red color. Splash decanted, drank 1 small glass over 30 minutes nest to the '08 Stolpman. By far the WOTN, and while the '08 Stolpman is very good, this is a significant step up in finesse and complexity. The nose has nice funk, leather, more subtle red fruits and spice notes. The palate is complex and juicy, with that mouthwatering acidity, very earthy, funk, glycerin, concentrated, red fruits, with a little heat intermixed. This is medium full bodied, nice tannins and good persistence.

Flight 4 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Château Suduiraut 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Light golden color. Drank a small glass over 20 minutes. Powerful nose of tropical fruits, honey, coconut, pineapple, tangerine, and subtle floral notes. The palate shows pretty good acid, though i expected it to be focused, the body is there, fairly honeyed and unctuous already, nice tropical fruit, pineapple and coconut, tangerine, spiced, medium finish. As good as this is, based on this showing, I suspect it has entered into that no man's land of Sauternes drinking and won't really show its stuff for a few more years. Hold. 93(+)pts.
