wine ark alexandria
Tasted Monday, March 27, 2017 by chatters with 410 views
Big Burgundy tasting organised by Wine Ark. A table for each of the importers (e.g. Cellarhand, negotiant, Bibendum etc) but I just went through the white and then the reds. I finished with the Beaujolais because I wanted to end on something refreshing...bit of an unusual choice but there you have it.
That Louis Michel Montee de Tonnerre feels like it might worm it's way into my cellar especially based on price point.
a few winners here but nothing crazy good…
Red cherry fruit, touch of clay, floral top notes. More of the same on the palate with quite grippy and gritty drying tannins. Reasonable length for a village wine.

tiny stalks, herbaceous whiffs. Quite dusty and funky, red currant fruit. Dense and juicy on the palate. That red currant is riper here as well. Plentiful gum grip. Tannins are finer here though and lend breadth to the mid palate. Rather nice.

Herbaceous and leather red berry fruit, slight bonfire ash as well. That silky element translate to the palate it's quite fresh but the fruit is muted, touches of black tea as well as a sweet oak note. Hmm.

Perfumed red berry fruit, touches of beetroot - but not in a bad way, cream, sweet spice. Stalks here as well I suspect but very well integrated. Beautifully balanced. Long. Silky tannins, smooth. Elegant. Very impressive.

Red currant and berry. Chewy tannins, especially front of mouth over pretty red fruit. Time required. Medium length. Kind of nice.

Slight stalks, pretty red currant and red berry fruit. On the palate savoury cherry, slightly peppery red fruit. Tannins are more restrained but very much gum gripping. Again, kind of nice.

meaty and savoury, red currant, slight leather. Savoury with tannic grip, not massively fruity but structured and quite long. Okay.

Ooh, a little coffee here and oak. Dusty with sweet spice. Fresher and more generous, for me, that the other two wines but I kind of like all three

medium minus intensity aromas of stalks, meat and savoury elements. Quite tart and hard with aggressive tannins. Nah.

struck match dominates quite muted red and black fruit. The fruit is savoury but juicy on the palate with gritty tannins. Hmm, It kind of appeals. Okay.

Coffee, red berry - especially strawberry, toast. Juicy, flesh with strawberries. Generous. Fine chalky tannins but fruit persists. Long. Nice.

Cream, muted milky coffee, red berries with slight cherry. Quite perfumed. Juicy, generous, slightly bitter coffee grounds resides with lovely red fruit notes. Tannins are silky and integrated. Good.

Slightly herbaceous almost fresh stalks and herbs initially over red tending to black berry. It's a bit hard, tart and foursquare on the palate with a kind of carbonic maceration sweetness off setting this. Hmm. Time?

Savoury, slight stalks and meaty cherry fruit. It s a little tart and old on the palate with slightly chalky tannins. Meh.

Perfumed, concentrated red cherry, cream, and vanilla. More of the same on the palate with a touch of star anise. Fine, talc textured tannins. All carries long. Hmm. The ingredients are there but something isn't quite right for me on this one. Perhaps a lack of balance and harmony?

Meaty and savoury, muted red fruit. Juicy to tart on the palate. Bit tough for me. Nah

Polished oak, muted fruit, sweet spice. Hmm. Quite hard and tart on the palate with gritty, chalky tannins. Nah.

slight stalks, red berries; like freshly squeezed raspberry juicy, quite charming and pretty nose. Might be a touch of oak here as well. On the palate it's fleshy and juicy, fruit persist here with tiny coffee touches and slightly drying fine textured tannins. Nice.

Both the chap next to me and myself perceived this wine as impressively corked on the nose but the chap pouring argued that this was the style of the wine. The next wine by the same producer certainly did not exhibit this stylistic nuance. I have no idea why the sellers would want to show us a corked wine and then insist that it is not flawed. FLAW

Dusty and muted red fruit under some stalks. Better on the palate but in the land of the blind the one eyed man is king. At least it wasn't corked. Nah.

Muted red fruit is hidden under slight coffee and cream, touches of warm spice. Juicy and fresh red currant fruit on the palate though with grippy, gritty and quite rustic tannins. Kind of nice.

Medium minus intensity aromas of stalks, leather blackberry fruit. Prettier on the palate with fine tannins and medium length. Bit simple. Hmm

Slightly bitter, touches of ash, dusty, slightly sour red fruit. Oooh, this is ungenerous on the palate. Tough, tart, hard and, well, unpleasant. Not very nice at all.

hard and stalky, meaty and wild ferment over some carefully hidden pretty red fruit. In the mouth that pretty fruit is hidden beneath stalks and gritty, chewy tannins. Hmm. Time?

sulphurs, very funky; wild ferment. Not much else on the nose. On the palate there is a core of beautiful fruit within the wild ferment , stalks and chewy tannins. Lots of time required here. The acidity is quite sharp as well. Okay. I like the idea of getting a bottle and leaving it for 15 years or so.

slight black cherry and lovely earthy quality. Opens in the glass on the nose. Pretty bouquet. Feels like a touch of stalks on the palate but quite jubey, pretty fruit. Tannins are fine. Pretty good.

Quite jubey black cherry fruit. Very pretty nose. Again, feels like very slight stalks inclusion from this producer. Not massive long but very pleasant and quaffable. Nice.

That piron cote du py was pretty nice
Cream with muted but present black cherry fruit. Confected black cherry fruit on the palate with fine tannins, pretty, fresh, easy and rather lovely

Ha ha ha…smells like this years home made wine - stalks, whole bunch and whole berry, bit of cherry fruit and funkiness. Prettier and sweeter than my home-made wine on the palate though with gentle cherry and fine textured tannin. Touch more breadth than the entry level wine. Nice

Ah, quite Pinotesque…pretty red and black berries with slight liquorice. Dense and chewy tannins, fruit persists with that liquorice note. Pretty bloody good and great QPR.

Pretty red cherry fruit, sweet, almost candied, notes. More of the same on the palate. Juicy as well. A pleasant, pretty, undramatic Beaujolais. Nice.

That slightly herby note. Stone fruit,. Lemon, fleshy, quite warm and spiced. Plenty of font of mouth grip. Lacks a bit of acidity for me.

2013 Mischief and Mayhem Bourgogne Blanc

Cream, vanilla, sweet spice over muted fruit. A bit sure from an acidity perspective but then, oddly a little warm on the finish. Pokey oak as well. Nah

2013 Domaine du Chateau de Meursault Chardonnay Bourgogne Blanc Clos du Château

Stone fruit, cream, spice there is a sudden step up in richness with this wine. It's a little tart and out of whack on the palate though. Stone fruit, butter, cream. Time?

2010 Domaine du Chateau de Meursault Meursault 1er Cru Charmes
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Meursault 1er Cru
Peachy fruit, butter, cream and sweet spice. A little muted after the 2013. More of the same on the palate but the oak is a little obvious and overbearing for me today. Hmm

2014 Louis Jadot Saint-Aubin Blanc
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin
Peachy, creamy, buttery with sweet spice and vanilla. Quite ripe Burgundy and tending towards the new world but well balanced. More of the same on the palate. The oak is a little pointy but this is pleasant enough.

2008 Domaine Parent Corton Blanc
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton Grand Cru
Slight sulphur, struck flint, cream, muted stone fruit and slight citrus notes. Massive spice palate keeps going and going. Bit of font of mouth grip as well. Cream, butter, toasted notes but, perhaps, lacks a touch of fruit for me. Savoury. Mineral. Yes. Hmm. not sure. I think a bottle and a whole roast chook would be a good way to spend an hour or two.

2009 Jean-Pierre Guyon Morey St. Denis Clos de la Bidaude Blanc
France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis
meaty, slight stone fruit and cream but a little flat on the nose…even with agitation it's not really coming to the party. This is pretty awful on the palate as well. Nah.
