Introduction

Paumanok visit (with the baby who was on best behaviour)...Charles can we move in? Visiting Paumanok should be a weekly tradition :)
Charles, Kareem - hospitality is too bland of a word to describe you guys... You really made us feel at home! Please remmeber - our door is always open should you ever want to join us for dinner in queens..i can promise barrel smaples though (unless of yogurt..but a quart isnt really a barrel)...but i can promise that we will be glad to see you in our home.
and then there was wine and oysters.. umm...words? nah... silence is gold :)

oh and then the 5 of us...well 4 (zacky is not really getting his share yet) had shishkobabs and freshly roasted LI corn... yeah.. and an apple pie... :)

Doug and Reme - :) everything is more fun with friends... but then again we think of you as family by now :) Thanks guys!!

  • 2006 Paumanok Chardonnay Festival 87 Points

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

qpr alert, light, no malo, stainless steel, bright citrus, grassy notes, high acid, lively - almoust like a trocken reisling, touch rough on the finish. perfect summer wine..YUM!

  • 2005 Paumanok Chardonnay Barrel Fermented 86 Points

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

this needs time to show itself. very primary - lots of butterscotch, this is malo/oak aged, lots of free run juice goes into this wine, less acidity, fuller wine, rich middle and nice but a touch hot finish (i am very sencitive to this in white wines being a lover of german riesling so most probably would not notice it). in time this will probably develop a lot more complexity then there is now.

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

richer than first expected, tropical fruit - grapefruit as well though, good acidity on the finish, a touch short. this worked amazingly with the oysters though... MMMM oyster... :)

  • 2003 Paumanok Merlot 88 Points

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

Paumanok Merlot.. lets see.. YES! first of all its an amazing QPR IMO. then ..well then comes the note:
No "Grand Vintage" in '03 - so all the good stuff went into the white label Merlot - and it shows, lots of structure here (a baby now!) rich tannis that are showing signs of goodness ahead, plums, bit rougher than the '02 but great acidity as well.. i had to get some for myself.

  • 2004 Paumanok Cabernet Franc Grand Vintage 90 Points

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

Again - i am NOT a huge Cab Franc guy...just dont love peppers, BUT this is amazingly good. This is bdx-like, rich, low on pepper, an explosion of flavors in the middle, silky tannins.. YUMMY!

  • 2002 Paumanok Merlot Grand Vintage 89 Points

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

HUGE upside - this is 89+++ not just 89. very rich, but with great structure, bdx bandaid, bit closed in the middle now, long creamy finish. at 5 years old its a baby. put this away and watch it blossom. A BUY

  • 2004 Paumanok Assemblage 91 Points

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

ok ok ..fine.. DONT BUY THIS ...LEAVE MORE FOR ME :) kidding.. Assemblage - every year of it that i have tried - has always been my fav in the lineup. How Paumanok crew manages to create this perfect balance in the wine is beyond me..all i know is this stuff rocks.

there isnt much to put in the note..its the complete package - take all previous notes, blend on low speed, add petit verdot and sip. oh and dont sip now... put it AWAY for 3-5 years. then we'll talk.

  • 2006 Paumanok Semi-Dry Riesling 87 Points

USA, New York, Long Island, North Fork

i am a pretty tough critic when it comes to rieslings... but there is something pretty amazing in this one. for once on this side of the world someone captured the spirit of Mosel. Kabinet/Qba style wine, good RS in the middle but sry finish, asian pear, stone fruit, apple, long finish. very nice!

  • 2002 Ridge Lytton Springs 91 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Dry Creek Valley

can someone explain what WS was tasting when they gave it 83 points??

this is a baby, a given, but right out of the gate this showed impressive ripe red fruit, lots of structure - both acid and tannins, ripe zin-like middle with pepper and raspberry, juicy not jammy fruit, touch of typical zin bitterness on the finish, long finish at that, needs years but seems like a wine that one would be happy to drink for years to come. excellent....(arg that means another producer i need to add to "must buy list"...)

Closing

LI may not be the next Australia or Spain - but if Paumanok is any indication - there is a lot of great potential in this part of the world.
