My turn to host the Wine Flock for an intro/retro. Theme was Pinot (and a starter Chard flight) that was equally represented by Grand Cru Burg, 1er Cru Burg, California and Oregon. Wines were served single blind, and each taster was asked to identify whether a wine was Grand Cru, 1er Cru, Cali or Oregon. Given the riper vintage in Burg and Oregon and the more traditional Cali producers, these wines were pretty difficult to place into the four categories of Pinot. As a group, we did a pretty lousy job of pegging the wines.
- The Rivers Marie was an outlier where 6 of 7 correctly identified that wine as California.
- The Littorai and Cristom fooled the most with only 1 of 7 tasters correctly identifying as Cali and Oregon respectively. Most thought the Cristom was Burg and the Littorai was Oregon.
- Six wines (Rhys, Eyrie, Jadot, Boillot, Gibourg and St. Innocent) were correctly identified by 2 of 7 tasters.
- Three wines (Lafarge, Arnoux and de Montille) were correctly identified by 3 of 7 tasters.
All the wines, save an off Lafarge, showed great and I'm happy to have all these producers/wines in my cellar. I expect with more age the wines will distinguish themselves further and start to show their terroir more transparently. A fun exercise none the less!
Re: air treatment -- All of the whites saw 15 minutes of air, and then were returned to the bottle for ~120 minutes prior to serving. All of the reds saw 2 hours of air, and then were returned to the bottle for ~60 minutes prior to serving.
2013 Domaine Dublère Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Tasted single blind. Medium nose has a Chablis-like aromatic -- crisp apple and pear, chalk and just a hint of wood. Lean and elegant on the palate with moderate concentration. Lots of citrus and chalky accents. I was guessing this was the Brickhouse given the more restrained, lean character. My #3, Group #3 -- though the 1, 2 and 3 wines were very close for the group.

2013 Brick House Chardonnay Cascadia 90 Points
USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge
Tasted single blind. A more brooding and closed in nose. Some pear and apple notes emerge with swirling. The palate has good concentration and lots of crunchy acidity. Tight and not giving much. I thought this was the Corton-Charlie, that was showing shut down. My #2, Group #4.

2013 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère 93 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru
Tasted single blind. A boastful, yum nose with sweet apples and pears, tropical notes and spice. Real lush on the palate with mouth-coating fruit and great volume. Judicious, but obvious oak spice. Nicely balanced with fresh acids. Given the flashier style, I was pretty sure this was the Mouchere. My #1, Group #2.

2013 Littorai Chardonnay Mays Canyon 90 Points
USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley
Tasted single blind. Medium nose of sweet apple and pear with slight wood notes and a bit of alcohol poking out. The palate is plush with round, rich fruit that has excellent concentration. Good balancing acids. I thought this was the Littorai given the richness -- not the best showing, in my opinion. The group liked it much better than me. My #4, Group #1.
