Introduction

My turn to host the Wine Flock for an intro/retro. Theme was Pinot (and a starter Chard flight) that was equally represented by Grand Cru Burg, 1er Cru Burg, California and Oregon. Wines were served single blind, and each taster was asked to identify whether a wine was Grand Cru, 1er Cru, Cali or Oregon. Given the riper vintage in Burg and Oregon and the more traditional Cali producers, these wines were pretty difficult to place into the four categories of Pinot. As a group, we did a pretty lousy job of pegging the wines.

- The Rivers Marie was an outlier where 6 of 7 correctly identified that wine as California.
- The Littorai and Cristom fooled the most with only 1 of 7 tasters correctly identifying as Cali and Oregon respectively. Most thought the Cristom was Burg and the Littorai was Oregon.
- Six wines (Rhys, Eyrie, Jadot, Boillot, Gibourg and St. Innocent) were correctly identified by 2 of 7 tasters.
- Three wines (Lafarge, Arnoux and de Montille) were correctly identified by 3 of 7 tasters.

All the wines, save an off Lafarge, showed great and I'm happy to have all these producers/wines in my cellar. I expect with more age the wines will distinguish themselves further and start to show their terroir more transparently. A fun exercise none the less!

Re: air treatment -- All of the whites saw 15 minutes of air, and then were returned to the bottle for ~120 minutes prior to serving. All of the reds saw 2 hours of air, and then were returned to the bottle for ~60 minutes prior to serving.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2013 Domaine Dublère Corton-Charlemagne 91 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. Medium nose has a Chablis-like aromatic -- crisp apple and pear, chalk and just a hint of wood. Lean and elegant on the palate with moderate concentration. Lots of citrus and chalky accents. I was guessing this was the Brickhouse given the more restrained, lean character. My #3, Group #3 -- though the 1, 2 and 3 wines were very close for the group.

  • 2013 Brick House Chardonnay Cascadia 90 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Ribbon Ridge

Tasted single blind. A more brooding and closed in nose. Some pear and apple notes emerge with swirling. The palate has good concentration and lots of crunchy acidity. Tight and not giving much. I thought this was the Corton-Charlie, that was showing shut down. My #2, Group #4.

  • 2013 Domaine Henri Boillot Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos de la Mouchère 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru

Tasted single blind. A boastful, yum nose with sweet apples and pears, tropical notes and spice. Real lush on the palate with mouth-coating fruit and great volume. Judicious, but obvious oak spice. Nicely balanced with fresh acids. Given the flashier style, I was pretty sure this was the Mouchere. My #1, Group #2.

  • 2013 Littorai Chardonnay Mays Canyon 90 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Tasted single blind. Medium nose of sweet apple and pear with slight wood notes and a bit of alcohol poking out. The palate is plush with round, rich fruit that has excellent concentration. Good balancing acids. I thought this was the Littorai given the richness -- not the best showing, in my opinion. The group liked it much better than me. My #4, Group #1.

Flight 2 (12 Notes)

  • 2012 Rhys Pinot Noir Skyline Vineyard 94 Points

    USA, California, Santa Cruz Mountains

Tasted single blind. Beautiful, lifted aromas -- more black than red cherry, lots of spice and some stem character. This is delicious on the palate in a light-to-medium bodied frame with bright acidity. Precise detailing. Finish is full of spice. The wine kept improving in the glass -- upside from here as the wine gains depth and complexity. I was guessing this was the Eyrie given the lighter styling but new world fruit. 4 or 7 also thought this was Oregon and 2 of 7 thought it was Cali. My #4, Group #5.

  • 2012 Cristom Pinot Noir Louise Vineyard 95 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Eola - Amity Hills

Tasted single blind. This wine was initially quite brooding and clamped down. With time though, it was signing in the glass. Rich, full nose of red and black cherry with strong earth and herbal tones. Bigger and very concentrated on the palate, with good balancing structure. Clear whole cluster markers are nicely integrated. This is delicious and loaded. I guessed this to be the Arnoux Latricieres. 3 votes for Grand Cru and 2 votes for 1er Cru, so most of the group thought this was old world. My #1, Group's #2.

  • 2012 The Eyrie Vineyards Pinot Noir Daphne Vineyard 91 Points

USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Dundee Hills

Tasted single blind. A very bright garnet with hints of purple. Full, bright nose has sweeter cherry with some stem and spice notes. The palate shows simpler with sweeter candied cranberry fruit with loads of bright, juicy acids. One of the most purely red fruited wines of the night. No doubt, this wine will be a lot better with age as it gains nuance and depth. 3 Grand Cru votes (which is somewhat surprising given how the wine showed), 2 votes for Oregon. I thought this was the Rhys. My #9, Group's #11.

  • 2012 Domaine Michel Lafarge Volnay 1er Cru Les Caillerets Flawed

France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Volnay 1er Cru

Tasted single blind. This showed very 'dumb' -- clunky with low acid and prune-like fruit. Probably a compromised bottle. My #12, Group's #12.

  • 2012 Louis Jadot Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru Clos St. Jacques Domaine Louis Jadot 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Gevrey-Chambertin 1er Cru

Tasted single blind. Pure, lifted aromatics of fresh cherries and florals. Shows a bit hard today with lots of acid and tannic structure. Huge amounts of concentration, just non-delineated. Definitely one that is built to last. Fleshes out a bit with air. 4 of 7 thought this was Grand Cru (the most GC votes for any of the 12 wines) and 2 of 7 thought 1er Cru -- so clearly identifiable as old world. My #10, Group's #8.

  • 2012 Domaine Robert Arnoux / Arnoux-Lachaux Latricières-Chambertin 93 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Latricières-Chambertin Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. Deep, dark garnet -- one of the darkest colored wines. A big, rich nose of black cherries with some meat and spice. Wow, loads of concentration and a cross-section of red and black cherry. The size and scale had me convinced this was the Bonnes Mares. 3 votes for GC and 3 votes for 1er Cru -- so another wine that clearly showed old world. My #5, Group's #7.

  • 2012 Domaine de Montille Clos Vougeot 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Clos Vougeot Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. A gorgeous nose -- probably my favorite nose of the night. An earthy, leathery, stemmy quality along with black cherry. Excellent concentration with great polish and precision on the palate. Long, sexy finish. I guessed this to be the Cristom given the whole cluster impression and polish. 3 votes for Grand Cru, 2 for California. My #2, Group's #3.

  • 2012 Henri Boillot Bonnes Mares 94 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Bonnes Mares Grand Cru

Tasted single blind. Full nose is loaded with fresh cherry fruit and some clay and earth tones. Wow, this is so generous on the palate. Nice combination of power and energy. Long finish has layer upon layer of flavors. Pretty ready to go, so I was guessing this was 1er Cru from Gibourg. 3 guesses for 1er Cru, 2 for GC and 2 for Cali. My #3, Group's #1 WOTN. I guess Boillot can make young Bonnes Mares approachable and generous!

  • 2012 Littorai Pinot Noir Cerise Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Tasted single blind. The nose is a bit dusty initially but clears up to reveal muscular black cherry. So tasty on the palate with powerful, ripe red cherry that gives a sweeter impression. Great concentration and length. I thought this was the St. Innocent. 4 votes for Oregon and 2 votes for 1er Cru. My #7, Group's #6.

  • 2012 Domaine Georges Mugneret-Gibourg Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Les Chaignots 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Tasted single blind. Tighter nose with black cherry and herb are a bit nondescript. The palate is lovely with loads of red fruit, florals and tons of spice (which should have given away this vineyard, which is on the Vosne side of NSG). Upside from here. I guessed this to be the Jadot. Three votes for Oregon, 2 for GC, 2 for 1er Cru. My #8, Group's #4 (in a virtual tie with the de Montille).

  • 2012 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Shea Vineyard 91 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley, Yamhill-Carlton

Tasted single blind. A big, yum nose with richer, riper black cherry fruit. Palate is smooth and rich with concentrated black and red cherry. Good balancing tannin makes for a silky texture in the finish. Very nice, if a bit simple and easy drinking. I guessed Cali. 4 guesses for Cali, and 2 for Oregon so clearly identifiable as new world. My #11, Group's #9.

  • 2012 Rivers-Marie Pinot Noir Summa Old Vines 93 Points

USA, California, Sonoma County, Sonoma Coast

Tasted single blind. This is such a distinctive wine that it stood out very clearly as the Rivers Marie. Full, rich nose of delicious ripe black cherry, orange peel and spice. The palate is richly fruited and plush. The most ripe wine of the line-up, but well balanced with juicy acidity. Terrific and singular wine. Six guesses for Cali, and one guess for Oregon. By far the most identifiable wine for the group. My #6, Group #10.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 1990 Calera Pinot Noir Mills Vineyard 92 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Mount Harlan

Served double blind to the group as a bonus wine. The concentration, richness and ripeness of this wine makes it impossible to guess as a 27 year old Pinot Noir. Really amazing how this wine has aged glacially. Good spice and leather accents. Should go for at least another decade, but don't see it getting better.
