Introduction

A group of us got together - since it had been a while - with the excuse of celebrating Vick's bday. Whatever works. We ended up having some real gems. as well. Gotta keep the wife happy :)

Flight 1 (10 Notes)

  • 2009 Roederer Estate L'Ermitage Brut 91 Points

USA, California, North Coast, Anderson Valley

Light gold color. Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes. Rock solid vintage, this feels youthful and very tasty. Green apple, light and crisp, lighter chalk-like minerality, a touch of bread dough, very clean. 91+pts with room to improve a couple points.

  • 2012 Domaine William Fèvre Chablis 1er Cru Montmains 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Chablis, Chablis 1er Cru

Pale gold color. Drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. This was drinking very well - and a big step up from the '15 we had the other night. Very bright and focused, good acid, dank seashore nose with classic citrus and saline. 92+pts.

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Lucia Highlands

Drank 1 glass over 20 minutes as an intermezzo. Citrus, lemony, lightly toasted oak barrel, pear, medium full bodied, lively and with good depth. I found this quite tasty and a nice QPR.

Dark, rich blackberry, black cherry, good acid, a green streak - though not real strong, enough to remind me where it's from, chewy.

  • 1983 Château Lascombes 95 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Margaux

Dark red color, no bricking. PNP, drank 1+ glass over an hour. Wow, what an amazing bottle this was, far exceeding expectations. We were supposed to have a bottle of this a few weeks back that someone else was bringing, and it ended up being corked. I figured that odds were with us, but who knows. This is quintessential mature old school Bordeaux. A wine you can just sit and smell all night. Everything is wonderfully integrated, the nose is a beautiful perfume of leather, rose hips, roast beef, funk, pencil lead, fresh cedar box, with cassis, and boysenberry. The palate is also stellar, elegant, medium bodied, gorgeous tannins, integrated oak and tannins, and adding to cherry to everything present on the nose. Very long and balanced. While mature and completely ready to drink, I think this can easily go another 5 to 10 years. Might have been lightning in a bottle, but I'm likely underscoring this tonight at 95+pts.

  • 2009 Brewer-Clifton Pinot Noir Clos Pepe Vineyard 88 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Sta. Rita Hills

Dark red color. Others probably enjoyed this more than I did. I enjoy the B-C chards very much, but I'm not crazy about their pinot. It was ok, but not really my style. Clearly California and CC at that. It has a briary, sour black cherry, cherry cola, very spicy profile and has some angularity that just feels more clunky and not particularly refined like I prefer.

  • 2010 St. Innocent Pinot Noir Freedom Hill Vineyard 93 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 2 hours, and another small glass 2 nights later. A testament to this wine and it's aging curve, this was noticeably better 2 days later. I'm not sure you need to lay off them, but if you have a couple give one a chance to sit a bit. The purity of the 2010 vintage is on fine display, the pretty red fruits shine with strawberry and raspberry, layered and vibrant with good structure and fine spices. The earth is there and should evolve more over time. We drank this next to the '07 white Rose which is hard to stand up to, but the similarities can be seen. 92pts day one, 93pts day three.

  • 2007 St. Innocent Pinot Noir White Rose Vineyard 97 Points

    USA, Oregon, Willamette Valley

Medium red color. PNP, drank 1+ glass over 2 hours plus. I try to only open one of these every 8 or 9 months. And every time I open one, I shiver a bit thinking it won't live up to my expectations. I might get past that someday. This would turn out to be the best of many incredible bottles. Clearly the evolution continues. This simply has a stunning nose, I can't recall anything that has the complicated, lifted spice tones that are here. It dances across the olfactory sense and plays games with your mind. I just get giddy even thinking about it now. The floral spice box mixed with such light and pure red berry and cherry notes on the nose and palate are divine. Featherweight and elegant, this has the forest floor, leather, and brightness on top of a silky texture and continual waves on the finish. Mesmerizingly ethereal for me. 96+ to 97pts.
