Flight 1 (5 Notes)

  • 2012 Seresin Viognier 84 Points

    New Zealand, South Island, Marlborough

Nose of an aromatic varietal with prominent toasted oak. The Viognier is varietally correct, but the delicate, melody aspects of the grape seem overwhelmed by the elevage. This feels as if the fruit has receded since bottling, leaving the oak as a prime driver of this wine's expression.

  • 2001 Trimbach Riesling Clos Ste. Hune 94 Points

    France, Alsace

World-class riesling at it's apogee of expression. Certainly at a peak of maturity, this shows stone fruit, citrus, honey, earth, fresh florals and foliage, and lifted aromatics. In the mouth, a very special supple texture is a major feature of the wine. Round, mineral, complete and very long. This has very attractive and rich ripe flavours, but finishes with a very serious structure. The bones of this wine are superb.

  • 2006 Château de Saint Cosme Gigondas Le Poste 90 Points

    France, Rhône, Southern Rhône, Gigondas

Mature, soft and balanced. Beautiful expression of Grenache. Supple texture, red fruits, leather and thyme. Drinking at close to full resolution, for my tastes.

  • 2012 Yeringberg Shiraz 81 Points

Australia, Victoria, Port Phillip, Yarra Valley

Dense purple. Cool-climate nose of earth, black berries, oak, boiled cabbage and mustard seed. Intense and balanced in the mouth, with signs of under-ripe fruit, menthol, and earthy nuances. This feels like a throwback to 20 or 30 years ago, with Austrian wines chasing cool terroirs, but producing wines that felt quite green...

  • 2015 Domaine Simha Pinot Gris Sanskrit 83 Points

    Australia, Tasmania, Southern Tasmania

This is the cleanest orange wine that I have drunk. Slightly cloudy rose-orange, tinned peaches, hand lotion and a touch of high-toned earthy aspects give this a very juicy nose (that some in the room said was less than vinous). In the mouth, this has a light tannic structure, bright acids, and a texture that veers closer to a white wine than a red. Juicy in quality, and well-balanced, with a lovely textural element. This is about as easy to drink and understand for an orange wine, that I have come across. 84, but grading on an "orange" curve, I could see some coming close to 90 for this wine...
