  • 1996 Château Léoville Las Cases

Perfect expression of LLC, drunk at its absolute peak. Gorgeous refined cassis notes, meaty, and cedar. Supple and completely refined palate, with granite, mineral, cassis, leather and a gentle modulated finish. The tanning structure is supple and the wine simply goes down like water. Perhaps it’s a little understated, but the proportion, refinement and complexity mark this as about as good as Bordeaux gets. Feels a little against type, but perhaps the vintage has come around. Not sure this can improve, but there shouldn’t be any hurry - it will hold and develop. Superb.

  • 2024 Nanny Goat Cross Breed

Really fine orange wine from Nanny Goat. Lovely plum skin notes, apricot fruit, gentle but firm tannins - clean , banged and drinking well. A very modern orange wine that delivers a real sense of class and equilibrium.

  • 2016 Sami-Odi Syrah HD Syrah

Stunningly good. Fabulous refinement. Deepest blackberry liqueur, expressive va, satin texture, ripe and rich but not at all overbearing . Gorgeous black olive notes. The refinement is off yhe charts and while this is approachable, I can only imagine this will improve. 95+

12/12/2025 6:54:00 PM - Hi Mark. I'm moving down your way (Dunedin) and a common acquaintance from Wellington (John C.) tells me we should connect. You can find my details easily on social media or google. Thierry Jutel.

9/8/2023 12:38:00 PM - Marc! I'm so glad that my greetings made their way to you, through Jono!! I hope you're also drinking well these days, I look forward to when we can share a bottle or two together sometime! Come visit Indiana haha!

7/27/2017 9:20:00 PM - Hi Chatters! I've actually moved down to Wanaka! But the wine shops that I like the most are Wine Direct 19 Station Road Penrose, Auckland or 9 St Georges Bay Rd Parnell, Auckland. The other shop is Caros. They are located at 2/114 St Georges Bay Rd, Parnell (near to the Parnell shop of Wine Direct).... Hope you have a great time, and look me up if you are ever in Central Otago. Cheers, Marc

7/27/2017 9:02:00 PM - Hi Marc, sorry to bother you but I'd rather go to an expert than google...I'm going to be in Auckland next weekend and was hoping you wouldn't mind suggesting a good bottle store to pick up some wine. I'll be doing Waiheke Island on the Friday so hope to grab some wine there as well. cheers, chatters

11/10/2015 8:32:00 PM - Not at all, Slimes! I'm pleased I was able to post the note in the correct place.

11/10/2015 3:10:00 PM - Sorry if my comment seemed a little strident. Moet Demi-sec was on a very good offer at Sainsbury's at the time and there aren't many notes on it. I think Nyetimber Demi-sec will still offer much better value. Thanks

9/20/2014 11:13:00 PM - Thanks, ilee! It is a great estate and it so gratifying to see it back in top form. I've got a few 09's and 10's put away, too... In vino veritas!

9/19/2014 4:24:00 AM - Excellent notes on the Hermitage La Chapelle vertical, very thorough and informative. Am a big fan of this estate, so your notes come in very handy. Particularly pleased to note your enjoyment of the 2009 and 2010 vintages, of which I have put away a few bottles for my son and daughter (also vintages 2009 and 2010 respectively). Keep up the great work!
