Introduction

Gary invited me over to share a few 1995 WA wines with friends. He also mentioned that he might have some nibbles ready. Hah, his idea of nibbles is obscene, as when I arrived there was a full, multi-course menu by the door. His cooking was as inspired as I have ever seen it, and was clearly the highlight of the night along with the fun company. The wines were OK to good. A couple of strong ones and a few weak ones. Most somewhat middle of the road. A tough WA vintage and not one I would still hold much of.

Flight 1 (1 Note)

A gorgeous wine to start things off and liven our palates.

Flight 2 (7 Notes)

Now we broke into a lineup of 1995's, non-blind, with one California wine for perspective.

  • 1995 DeLille Cellars Harrison Hill

USA, Washington, Columbia Valley, Yakima Valley

Pinot Noir color, quite translucent. Leafy, tobacco note on the nose. Some alcohol both on the nose and finish. Black cherry, lean, leafy and a bit dilute. Pleasant but fading fast.

  • 1995 Woodward Canyon Cabernet Sauvignon Artist Series

    USA, Washington

Much, much darker than the DeLille. Caramel and cheddar cheese on the spicy nose. Lush texture but too friggin oaky! The ample fruit is just buried under a blanket of pickle barrel flavored oak.

  • 1995 Andrew Will Sorella

    USA, Washington

Ahh, that's Washington. High-toned nose with raspberry and black currant. The palate is nice and chewy, still quite young, a strong acid profile, black cherry, cedar, fairly persistent with dusty tannins. Not much secondary aspect other than a hint of cedar. Sort of in suspended animation. What has 12 years done for this? Still, a nice, toothsomely chewy wine and one of the stars of the lineup.

  • 1995 Leonetti Cellar Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

A cedary, spicy nose. Nice, dark core. Dry on the edges with a little bitter chocolate, some lead pencil notes and a strong toasty element. Vaguely vegetal on the dark palate. Cocoa powder comes out on the intriguing nose.

  • 1995 Col Solare

    USA, Washington, Columbia Valley

Vitamin pill, sweet tarts, candied, VA nose. Not good. A really tart core, tannic, lacking generosity, disjointed, a bit harsh and bitter. This was infinitely more enjoyable to drink with cheese than on its own, but all in all a very disappointing wine.

  • 1995 Quilceda Creek Cabernet Sauvignon

    USA, Washington

Mmm, bright violets and then a little muddy on the nose. Chewy, dark, suave tannins, savory, fairly closed up at first. With time this opened up and gained a lot of interest, chewy, powerful, really nice intensity from beginning to end, a very complete wine.

  • 1995 Cain Vineyard & Winery Cain Five

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Very bretty. Strong horse notes dominate the wine, savory, sweaty. Not clean and not much fruit to be found, although to a brett lover like me there is some intrigue in this.
