Introduction

Tyrrell's masterclass with Andrew Spinaze chief winemaker at Tyrrell's. I've been a fan of Tyrrell's since encountering older Semillon on my arrival in Sydney in 2005 so this was a massive treat for me.

Flight 1 (9 Notes)

  • NV Tyrrell's Traditional Method Pinot Noir Chardonnay

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Sweet candied fruit on the nose. Slightly course mousse and a little sour and alcoholically warm on the palate. Nah

  • 2012 Tyrrell's Sémillon Single Vineyard Stevens

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

slightly herbaceous with hints to toast, butter, spice, honeyed and quite perfumed. Slight lemon and marzipan; lots going on the nose. In the mouth it's green apples juicy, fleshy, slightly waxy textured with slight warmth on the back palate. surprisingly forward for it's relative youth and eminently approachable. I'd even say it's quite generous for a Hunter Semillon

  • 2012 Tyrrell's Sémillon Vat 1

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Medium minus intensity aromas of cut grass, green apple and floral top notes. In the mouth it's that cut grass greenness, but more textured across the mid palate with slight sharp green apple and a little spice. Long and, well, not entirely unsurprisingly, exceedingly young.

  • 2015 Tyrrell's Chardonnay HVD

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Peachy, creamy and a little farty and gamey. Touches of leesy cheese, also a slight vegetal quality and a smidge of candied fruit. Juicy acidity, peach, quite spicy and a little alcoholically warm on the palate. Nose is better but, as it's a puppy, time may help the palate.

  • 2013 Tyrrell's Chardonnay Vat 47

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Richly oak, sweetly spiced, cream and yoghurt dominates lemon and peach. Reminds of Leeuwin estate a little. Juicy, tangy, spicy, slight citrus fruit and a bit of mid palate grip. Handy but still a little young for me.

  • 2005 Tyrrell's Chardonnay Vat 47

  • 2014 Tyrrell's Shiraz Special Release

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Plums and spice, almost rose petals and slightly candied notes over peppery spice. Far more spicy on the palate with plummy fruit, finely tannic. Very pleasant.

  • 2014 Tyrrell's Vat 8

Australia, New South Wales, Hunter Valley

Richer, plummier fruit with blackberry and blackcurrant and oak, creamy, slightly vanilla over earthy spice, spicy, fruity. Rich but also a little sharp. Tannins are quite fine. Hmm, it's a bit big and, for me, young.

Closing

What a pleasant tasting. Andrew proved to be an engaging and entertaining host and didn't seem to mind (other than some light eye rolling) my questions regarding wine making.
