Introduction

This was one of those tap into the cellar to clear some space events. Sort of like a Forrest Gump box of chocolates - you never know what you're going to get. Some are good, some are ok, and some are toast. I love toast, and we had some toast. But it is always a fun time and supplemented with a few ringers.

Flight 1 (12 Notes)

  • 2012 Cantina Terlan Gewürztraminer 86 Points

Italy, Trentino-Alto Adige, Alto Adige, Alto Adige - Südtirol

Tasted. On the nose, Lychee, pineapple, tropical, spiced. The palate is soapy, tropical fruits, distinct stony minerality, pepper, and spices on the tail end. There seems to be some noticeable wood treatment here too.

  • NV Laurent-Perrier Champagne Cuvée Rosé Brut 93 Points

    France, Champagne

Vibrant medium sockeye salmon red color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. This was firing on all cylinders. Great energy, seamless with a lacy, creamy elegance with graceful yet fully defined features. The nose gets you geared up with a burst of red berry fruits and effervescent minerality that dances across the nose hairs. Strawberry chiffon, with a floral freshness and yeastiness. The palate is refined, classy, medium bodied, great finesse and definition, strawberry, strawberry chiffon, creamy texture, roses, crystalline minerality and nice persistence. Drinking great 93 to 93+pts.

  • 2011 Beringer Vineyards Chardonnay Private Reserve 91 Points

    USA, California, Napa Valley

Light gold color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 30 minutes plus. This is still in good shape, and I don't see it falling off quickly. The nose shows white fruits, almond cream, vanilla bean. This wasn't showing much i n the way butter this time. The palate too is restrained, white fruits, quince, pear, spiced pear, and vanilla bean. Nice 91+pts.

  • 2000 Château Citran 88 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Haut-Médoc

Dark red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour plus. Very pleasant drinker with some good age. A little earthy, medium bodied, onion skin, dried cherry fruits, a bit simple and thin in the middle. Probably time to drink these up. 87+ to 88pts.

  • 2006 Greenock Creek Shiraz Apricot Block

Australia, South Australia, Barossa, Barossa Valley

Very dark purple/red color. PNP, followed a glass over an hour plus. This appears to have run its course, and now the 18.5%ABV and heavy handed wood has hamstrung the weakening blackberry liqueur fruit. Not really something that is drinkable at this point.

  • 2013 Byron Pinot Noir Nielson Vineyard 87 Points

USA, California, Central Coast, Santa Maria Valley

Medium red color. PNP, drank 1 glass over 40 minutes. On the nose, cherry, currants, spices - the fruit becomes more bold and forward over 20 minutes. The palate shows raspberry, spiced cherry, and some alcohol. Not bad, but suffers from from the heat. 87+pts.

  • 2006 Flinders Run Shiraz Southern Flinders Ranges 85 Points

Australia, South Australia, Far North, Southern Flinders Ranges

Purple red color. PNP, followed one glass for an hour. Another wine that lives up to the theme tonight - over the hill. These big behemoths just don't age this long. Get'em while the fruit is there and can compete with the alcohol. Not as bad as the Greenock Apricot, but still, no longer balanced - assuming it was at one point. Peppery, blackberry, baked plum, a hint of more mint than actual eucalyptus, wood, and alcohol on the mid palate through the finish.

  • 2006 Marquis Philips Shiraz 9 88 Points

Australia, South Australia, Fleurieu, McLaren Vale

Purple color. PNP, drank 1 glass over an hour. I don't mind being the odd man out, and it would appear so based on recent notes on this. I will say this was clearly the winner of the trio of '06 Shiraz that we tried tonight (Greenock Apricot, Flinder's Run). The nose still can bring it with smoke, wood spice, cassis and blackberry. The palate is fairly consistent, black fruits, dark chocolate, but more wood and alcohol show here too. Still in decent shape, but not what I would call a nicely aged Aussie shiraz. Those producers exist, but they are fewer and farther in between.

  • 2010 Robert Biale Zinfandel Black Chicken 86 Points

USA, California, Napa Valley, Oak Knoll District

Very dark red/purple color. PNP, followed a glass over 45 minutes. Herbal, harsh, alcoholic, pepper, black and blue fruits that feel thin now, medium plus body. The chicken is done - I mean over done.

  • 2014 Domaine Carneros Brut Rosé 91 Points

USA, California, Napa / Sonoma, Carneros

Delicate light pink color. Drank 1 glass over 30 minutes. We opened this late in the evening as more of a palate cleanser to the big, alcoholic reds we'd had earlier. It was nice to drink it after having had the LP rose earlier. The LP tonight was in a league of its own, and initially there was no contest at all. However, as with our previous bottle of the '14, it really needs 15 to 20 minutes at least to come out of its shell. When it does, there is a different wine that unfolds - going from very pleasant but not remarkable to a much more defined and energetic wine with a complex mix of fruits. Starting with peach, and apple this shows its red fruit later and then accelerates the power and depth. Elegant with apple blossoms on the nose as well and adding citrus to the finish. A fun comparison would be against the N/V Roederer Anderson Valley Rose which comes in a bit cheaper and always delivers at the price point.

  • 2005 Château Rieussec 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Sauternes

Medium golden honey color. From 750ml, drank 1 glass over an hour plus. Drinking really well again. Very nicely spiced, coconut, slightly tropical, pineapple, orange, honey, orange peel, great density and balance. Excellent.
