Flight 1 - The dry whites (3 Notes)

  • 2007 Dr. Bürklin-Wolf Forster Pechstein Riesling 93 Points

    Germany, Pfalz

Tasted blind. Wine decanted about 30min before tasting. Clear, youthful pale golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. Lots of ripe, mellow apple, mineral notes that reminded me of slate. Very compact, dense, youthful. Very nice, but not yet fully blossomed.
Dry, medium+ ripe acidity that gives this wine a vibrant energy. On the palate very salty with some yellow stone fruit, earthy tones and some (bitter) orange zests. Long, fine, lingering finish. Lots of pressure and tension, very good balance. Very young. We were very surprised to see this as a 2007 vintage. Has at least 5+ years of development ahead. Beautiful Riesling! 92-93+

  • 2009 Schäfer-Fröhlich Bockenauer Felseneck Riesling Großes Gewächs 92 Points

    Germany, Nahe

Tasted blind. Popped and poured which was a tiny mistake: This wine needs a lot of air!!!
Clear, pale golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. At first only some ripe apple, freshness and herbs, a tiny bit reductive. Over time with air lovely mineral notes and citrus fruit emerges and the nose got more complex.
Legally dry but with some amount of residual sugar. Medium+ ripe acidity. At first some blurred fruit that gets way more precise after about 1h. Gooseberry, yellow stone fruit, ripe citrus, herbs and very fine crushed stones. Finish is subtle, elegant and quite long. Very elegant. Interesting to see that it is from the warm 2009 vintage. Not fat or broad. Only reminiscence seems to be the bit more residual sugar. Still young with a bright future of at least 5-10years. 92-93

  • 2011 Jean-François Ganevat Côtes du Jura Les Grands Teppes Vieilles Vignes 92 Points

    France, Jura, Côtes du Jura

Tasted blind. Popped and poured. Clear pale golden color. Clean, medium intense, developing nose. Wild, reductive, some oak, apple must, reminded me of natural wines.
Bone dry, medium+ ripe acidity that gives this wine a great structure and vibrant energy. 12,5% abv. Guessed it to be Chardonnay, but could not locate its origin, because it is different from everything else I knew before. Very mineral, salty. Some apple, white pepper and some exotic fruit. Great tension and pressure on the palate. Lean, cool and elegant. Not yet at ist peak, I would give it another 5+ years. Very interesting experience! 92-93

Flight 2 - The red ones (4 Notes)

  • 1999 Weingut Krone Assmannshäuser Höllenberg Spätburgunder 92 Points

    Germany, Rheingau

Tasted blind. Popped and poured, from 0,375l bottle. This wine really polarized the group:
Clear, medium garnet color. Clean, pronounced and developing nose with intense aromas of herbs, redcurrant, spices and menthol. Complex and very expressive up to the level of being kitschy / too much.
Dry, medium+ ripe acidity. Almost no noticeable tannin. Sometimes a bit hot, due to the high amount of alcohol (14,0%abv). Medium+/pronounced flavors on the palate: Nettles, redcurrant, other herbs, spices, fruit juice. Everything perfectly blended. Again: Expressive and intense and for some simply too much. Long, lingering finish. We were all very surprised to see, that this was an 18 year old German Pinot. It has aged perfectly (especially considering the small bottle format) and has at least 5-10+ years of further development ahead. If you like this rather expressive style it is certainly around 92-93

  • 1962 Maire & Fils Morey St. Denis

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Morey St. Denis

Popped and poured. It is always a pleasure to taste such old Pinots and I am always surprised how good even village wines from unknown producers can age. Clear, medium tawny color. Clean, medium- intense, fully developed -> a bit past its best flavors: At first some medicinal notes that went away with air. Herbs, earthy tones, menthol. Still interesting and good.
Dry, medium (+) stable acidity, present and not fallen apart. Medium fine tannin. On the palate some malty notes, some red fruit detectable, dried herbs and again menthol. Opens up with air and is still joyful to drink. Hard to rate this oldtimer though.

  • 2003 Penfolds Shiraz St. Henri 91 Points

    Australia, South Australia

Decanted for about 1h. Clear, medium-deep ruby color with purple reflexes. Clean, medium intense, developing classic Shiraz nose: Spices, lots of dark fruit (blackberry), mint, leather. Surprisingly cool and not too perfumed or broad.
Dry with some extract sweetness. Medium+ well integrated acidity that gives this wine a rather fresh backbone besides its high alcohol of 14,5% abv. On the palate classical Aussie Shiraz with lots of nice dark fruit, spiciness. Uncomplicated, joyful to drink and not as broad/fat as expected. Has several of further development ahead. 91-92. PQR is questionable considering much more complex Shiraz (Rockford/Glaetzer) in the same price range.

  • 2008 Jacques-Frédéric Mugnier Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru Clos de la Maréchale 92 Points

France, Burgundy, Côte de Nuits, Nuits St. Georges 1er Cru

Tasted blind. Popped and poured. Clear, youthful medium- ruby color. Clean, medium intense, youthful-developing nose easily identifiable as cool climate Pinot Noir. Lots of red fruit, herbs, spices and some orange notes.
On the palate very joyful to drink: Lots of red fruit (cranberry, raspberry), spices, floral notes. Medium+ acidity combined with the fine, ripe tannin gives it a good freshness, makes it vibrant and easy to drink. Lots of pressure and tension, medium+ finish. Still very young. Would like to taste it again in about 5-10 years time. 92-93.

Flight 3 - The noble sweet whites (4 Notes)

  • 2005 Egon Müller Scharzhofberger Riesling Kabinett 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Tasted blind. Clear, pale youthful golden color. Clean, medium intense, youthful-developing nose. For the first time in my life I understood the aroma of “Amalfi lemon”: very ripe, juicy yellow lemon fruit, mixed with elder blossoms and some fine mineral notes. Lovely but not overly complex perfume.
Off-dry, medium+, very fresh, ripe and stimulating acidity. Only 9,5% abv. On the palate again medium intense flavors of ripe yellow lemon, vanilla crescent, some herbs and very fine and subtle mineral notes. Medium+, lingering finish. Very elegant. What a great pleasure to taste this wine twice within a year! Compared to the bottle we had a few month ago it shows almost no signs of maturity, no petrol notes, still very driven by primary fruit. Would love to taste it in 5,10 and 15 years! 92-93

  • 1994 Von Schubert Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Spätlese 92 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Tasted blind. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium+ intense, developing nose that simply must be Grünhaus: Tangerine, cassis, herbs, mineral notes. Airy, complex, lovely Grünhaus perfume!
Off-dry, medium+/high, perfectly integrated acidity. This wine is a lighter copy of the great Abtsberg Auslesen: It has all genes of its bigger brothers, just with a lower intensity. Lean, elegant, juicy and joyful to drink. Tangerine, cassis, some exotic fruit, lots of fresh garden herbs poured over slate rock after a warm summer rain. I really love this style of wine! Potential for at least 5+ years. 92-93

  • 1990 Willi Schaefer Graacher Himmelreich Riesling Auslese 91 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Tasted blind. Popped and poured. Clear, medium golden color. Clean, medium- intense, developing nose, a bit closed and muted. Vanilla, herbs, watermelon, a bit of slate. Dense, closed.
Medium-dry, medium+ acidity with lots of lemon flavor. Almost no signs of ageing, no firn/petrol. Lots of ripe lemon on the palate, dark slate. A bit immature and harsh, closed. How can that be for a bottle that is 27years old? Give it at least 10+ years and it will certainly be a great wine, because it has lots of potential. Currently around 91.

  • 1989 Schloss Saarstein Serriger Schloss Saarsteiner Riesling Beerenauslese 93 Points

    Germany, Mosel Saar Ruwer

Decanted for about 30min. Clear, medium amber color with a reddish hue. Clean, medium- intense, developing nose. Not very appealing, some petrol, honey. I guess it simply needs way more time to open up.
On the palate a wonderful surprise: Sweet, but never sticky. The high amount of ripe and perfectly integrated acidity gives this wine a freshness and vibrancy that I have never seen in a Beerenauslese before. 9% abv. On the palate lots of fresh pressed blood orange. Perfect balance of sweetness and acidity. Long, lingering finish. Immortal with a potential of further ageing for 10-20 years. 93+
