Introduction

WOTN was 1990 Latour, which was one of the best wine's I've ever had. The Cuvee Madame was the best Sauternes I've ever had. I'm tempted to score that one 99.

Flight 1 (4 Notes)

Flight 2 (6 Notes)

  • 1982 Château Lynch-Bages 94 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted 2 hours. This wine is very accessible. Lovely red to black fruit, graphite and tobacco.

  • 1982 Château Cos d'Estournel 93 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Estèphe

Decanted 2 hours, this wine still improved over 1 hour in glass. The fruit is dark and slightly angry. There is cassis, graphite, leather and earth. There is clean funk.

  • 1986 Château Le Gay Pomerol 91 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Libournais, Pomerol

Pop and pour. This was a fun and interesting wine. I got the distinct taste of blood in it. Also, some kind of janitorial closet thing on the nose. Neither of those 2 things were negative IMHO. Other than that, it was a great old world well-aged Bordeaux.

  • 1990 Château Latour Grand Vin 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted 1 hour. Wow! This is one of the best wines I've ever had. It is completely open and delicious. It is soft and complex. There is a ton of complexity. Old world Bordeaux that is easy to drink and the palate is as good as the nose.

  • 1990 Château Léoville Las Cases 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

Decanted 4 hours. This wine has nice tannins that are still a bit grippy. There is significant black fruit along with leather, earth, funk and spice.

  • 1990 Château Mouton Rothschild 96 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, Pauillac

Decanted 1 hour. This wine was dominated by graphite, scorched earth and black fruit. It was significantly different than other Mouton's I've had, but no less satisfying.

Flight 3 (1 Note)

  • 2001 Château Coutet Cuvée Madame 98 Points

    France, Bordeaux, Sauternais, Barsac

Holy crap! This is the best Sauternes I've ever had. It has everything you want from a Sauternes, but it feels like they amplified everything. Yet it is not over the top. Sweetness, spice, fruit, acidity. They all hit you like a sledgehammer, and they are all in balance. This was eye-opening. I don't see how a Sauternes can be better than this. And I therefore don't know why I'm not giving it a 100. I just can't.
