Flight 1 (4 Notes)

  • 2008 Azienda Agricola San Giuseppe Brunello di Montalcino Stella di Campalto 94 Points

Italy, Tuscany, Montalcino, Brunello di Montalcino

Nose: The nose is expressive, savory, deep, and highly perfumed with red fruits, red cherries, rose petals, crushed rocks, violets, spice tones, leather, tobacco, ash notes, and some licorice and potpourri.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with meduim+ acidity and medium+ tannins. There is youth to the tannins as they have a chewiness to them. The feel is refined, poised, and savory with red fruits, red cherries, rose petals, wild flowers, crushed rocks, licorice, and leather.

Overall: This is a superlative Brunello. It is elegance personified and favors nuance over brute strength. This is a real delight with air right now, but it feels like there is more to come as long as one is patient for another 3-5 years.

  • 2004 Marcarini Barolo La Serra 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose: The nose is nuanced and perfumed with red cherries, tar, roses, strawberries, earth tones, licorice, and roasted herbs. There is good depth with a hi-toned nature to the nose.

Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The structure is still youthful with the tannins having a taught quality to them. The feel is feminine and nuanced with red cherries, tar, roses, strawberries, licorice, and roasted herbs.

Overall: This is a pretty and understated Barolo. It still feels a bit young as the tannins and acidity still have youth to them. It could still use another 3+ years to really show itself.

  • 2005 AR.PE.PE. Valtellina Superiore - Grumello Riserva Buon Consiglio 89 Points

Italy, Lombardia, Valtellina, Valtellina Superiore - Grumello

Nose: The nose is pretty and aromatic with red fruits, red cherries, red florals, fresh picked red berries, tar, and black tea notes. There is good complexity and freshness to the nose, but it is lacking depth as the tones seem to be more surface tones.

Taste: Medium bodied with high acidity and medium+ tannins. The tannins are youthful, but silky with red cherries, red florals, tar, and black tea notes.

Overall: If this can put on some weight and complexity with age, it would be able to really become something. Right now, it's pretty and perfumed, but it lacks depth on the nose and palate.

  • 2009 Fratelli Brovia Barolo Villero 91 Points

    Italy, Piedmont, Langhe, Barolo

Nose: The nose is open and giving with red cherries, dark red fruits, licorice, leather tones, roasted herbs, raspberries, and spice tones. There is a searching and robust quality to the nose that is intriguing.

Taste: Medium/full bodied with high acidity and high tannins. The structure is youthful, but the tannins are a little on the hard end. Beneath the structure lies a light-heavyweight-esque feel with red cherries, dark red fruits, licorice, roasted herbs, and raspberries.

Overall: This is an excellent Barolo. Even though the vintage didn't yield all of the most charming wines, this one does have a robust intrigue to it. It could use a few more years, but this feels like it will be best over the mid-term.
