Mags and I hosted some friends and colleagues on a beautiful Saturday evening for a mult-course culinary and wine event. It's always a little stressful to cook risotto for a crowd, but once we sat down I was able to enjoy the good food, company and wine.

Beautiful golden color. Nose of spiced apples/pears, and yeast. Palate of sweet apples, soft and rounded with good acidity and finish. Enjoyed as an aperitif.

Oxidized, but some hints of a very powerful wine.

2004 Françoise & Denis Clair Saint-Aubin 1er Cru Sur le Sentier du Clou Blanc 92 Points
France, Burgundy, Côte de Beaune, Saint-Aubin 1er Cru
Drank slightly too cold at first but previous notes still apply. Nose of apples, toast and a whiff of hazelnut. Palate of crisp apples, minerals, slight butter, but terrific acidity to provide structure. Good weight in the mouth. Some butterscotch on the finish which was pretty long. Very pleasing.

1993 Robert Mondavi Winery Cabernet Sauvignon Reserve 95 Points
USA, California, Napa Valley
Dark, youthful ruby color. Nose of briary fruits, tar, slight leather. Palate of blackberry, slight cassis, tar (which dissipated with 1hr decanting), tobacco and velvety tannins. Finish was long. This was an excellent, complex wine which seems as if it still has much life ahead. Paired with grilled rack of lamb, Stilton au gratin, sauteed arugala.

2002 Domaine des Baumard Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru 95 Points
France, Loire Valley, Anjou-Saumur, Quarts de Chaume Grand Cru
Beautiful light golden color with nose of orange rinds and honey. Palate reveals same with some apricot and spice. Good mouthfeel without being syrupy. Nice acidity to balance the gentle sweetness with a long finish. Served with a selection of cheeses.
