Klasse.

DG 06/2019 Cranberries, blueberries, blackcurrants, cherries, lime cordial, grapefruit, red and yellow apples, peach infusion, some floral notes. Despite the old reserve wines, Gatinois needs at least a year post-disorgement to be fully enjoyable. This bottle showed quite austere and one-dimensional compared with others we've drunk; easy to drink, but not at all stimulating. NR

MASTER CHAMPAGNE; 1/28/2019-4/30/2019 (WESTIN PALACE MILANO): Degustato alla cieca. 80% Pinot Noir. 7g/l - Base 2014. Solo Inox. Naso molto elegante, floreale e abboccato. Fresco, minerale, e carnoso allo stesso tempo. Vinosità profonda compatta, densa e quadrata. Sa di frutta secca tostata, molto ambizioso e ancora di acidità brusca e scalciante. Ha bisogno di qualche anno di bottiglia, ma si sente il gran manico. Molto buono, irreprensibile e veramente classico.

From magnum. Pale-onion color. It's subtle on nose, it may need some air. Opulent on palate with red fruit, spices and cinnamon. It drinks quite easy. Drank after the Pierre Peters extra brut, this one carries more weight, while easier to drink, it doesn't make you come back for another glass. 87-89

90% Pinot Noir of Aÿ, 10% Chardonnay. 2 years on the lees, and an additional year in the bottle. The reserve wines here are said to be quite old, I have no idea of the base vintage. This was actually my first taste of Gatinois, a wonderful surprise! Giving and expressive nose gives a wide spectrum of typical PN aromas, with a slightly exotic edge to it. Refreshing and balanced. Would like to match this with food. Not the most discreet kid in the block, but very tasty. I had this alongside the basic Egly-Ouriet and preferred this one.

Great nose of fresh apples, lemon zest, cinnamon, and brioche. The palate is focused and linear, with tart peaches/apples over minerals and lemon/lime acidity. Components of yeast, roasted nuts, and crust lend a bit of body. This is very well done and a great value. R&M 90+

Quite deep colour, almost like a pale rosé. Powerful nose of red apple, ripe pear, a hint of honey and spice, some bread, and a touch of perfume. Red apples on the palate, some red berries, hints of citrus, definitely good fruit concentration, good acidity, foody spiciness, elegant minerality kicks in mid-palate. Long, fruity and clean aftertaste. Very Aÿ-style to me, quite foody and vinous, and gives an impression that very good grape material went into this wine. Bottle purchased 2011.

Eh. Golden color -- with a pink tinge to it? Heavy. A little disjointed. I think this would have been better balanced if it had a bit more Pinot in it. Far from a favorite but is there such thing as a bad champagne? An oxymoron of sorts.

Medium deep bright onionskin colour verging on light rosé. In fact my wife was delighted "Ooh, rosé, lovely!" Very Gatinois bouquet eventually of spiced bread and gentle red fruits with a hint of fresh tobacco perhaps. Medium-bodied, a little brisk and tightly contained at this stage. Disgorged between twelve and eighteen months ago, this needs a little more time to open out. Two to three years usually does the trick. Length only modest. I'd be interested to see what the base is here.

Lots of green apples on the nose. Good bubbles and tart acid on the palate. Some funky oak which is nice. Tart and a little bitter on the finish. The finish is a bit of a bummer, cause the palate is quite nice.

Champagne introduction: Pierre Peters and Gatinois. (Barcelona): 5th wine and first pinot. Color it's amazing, reddish pink salmon. Bubbles are clearly bigger than previous wines. Smoky red fruit on nose, you can feel the carbonic jumping out of the glass. Fruity explosive entry on palate, it's like a whip... As temperature goes up currants more perceptible on palate. Long aftertaste. Too bubbly for me but good. 87-90

Similar to my previous note: Beautiful golden color with a slight salmon tinge (when pouring I thought it might have been oxidized but it was not). Nose of spiced apples/pears, and yeast. Palate of sweet apples, soft and rounded with good acidity and finish. Enjoyed as an aperitif.

Joyce's Birthday Dinner (The Universal @ Duxton Hill): Something about this bottle really made it stand out for me, especially when we served it with a white wine glass. This seemed to have quite a bit of age on it. Golden colour, super-fine bead, lovely caramelly nose with lots of browning red apples mixed in with umami flavours and a touch of earth. Palate was all spicy apple cider, with sparkly acidity watering the sides of the mouth. A little narrow on the attack, in opened up at the mid-palate with lots of round fruit and fine minerality. Nice weight and lovely balance here. Long, gorgeous finish too, very focused, with a lovely interplay of of slatey mineral and spice. I really enjoyed this. Great way to start the night.

L20-03, cellared in 2006. Hauntingly rich, sherried aromas of biscuits, almonds, and dried fruit that switch to extremely fresh and bright lemony fruit flavors with a very aggressive bead. The transition from the aroma to the taste is really like two completely different wines. The aroma is thought provoking. The flavor is good but not outstanding.

Big, red apple bruit and cinnamon spice. Rather round on the palate. Perhaps this lacks focus somewhat. Certainly it's not a precise style of Champagne, but, rather, a more winey, fruit-driven example. This could really shine with a wide range of foods, I would think.
