A gathering of wine geeks

Introduction

It was another excellent gathering with great folks that all really love wine and good company. We had some fun & unique wines and a lot of luck with the older wines...sadly only one wine was corked...a magnum.

Flight 1 - The welcome whites...Keller is a great way to start any event. (2 Notes)

  • 2007 Weingut Keller Abts E®.de Riesling Großes Gewächs

    Germany, Rheinhessen

This is absolutely brilliant...the nose is floral and herbal with a saline and mineral. The palate leads with lime, kiwi, green apple, and lemon...the finish goes on and on. It's awash in lingering notes of chalk and a sense of mineralogy that is so clear...yet equally indescribable. This wine is absolutely brilliant now and showed it's best 4+ hours after being opened. Extraordinary!!

  • 2015 Weingut Keller Abts E® Riesling Großes Gewächs

    Germany, Rheinhessen

There is a delicacy in the intensity of this wine...delicate floral scents, whips of fresh linen, seem to disperse throughout the intensely vibrant fruit notes. Flavors of lime, kiwi berry, lemon, and green apple seem to rise and fall at multiple points though the evolution of this wine on the palate as it seeks to engage all the senses. The finish on this wine seems unending as more keeps climbing into the mind. A brilliant wine that I will look forward to checking in on again in another 5-7 years time.

Flight 2 - Blind #1 - Kirk (1 Note)

  • 2012 Joseph Swan Vineyards Zinfandel Mancini Ranch

USA, California, Sonoma County, Russian River Valley

Similar to the last bottle I opened in the last month. Scents of spice, leather, blueberries, earth, and wild strawberry are present and as the wine washes across the palate as notes of sour cherry, pomegranate, and wild strawberry linger on the palate. Served blind a lot of people thought this was Alto-Piemonte as it's just so light and elegant while also showing some delicately bold red fruit notes. Just the kind of wine I want to drink and enjoy myself. One heck of a curve-ball for people that think they don't like Zinfandel.

Flight 3 - Blinds #2 - Ray (1 Note)

  • 1959 Château Léoville Poyferré

    France, Bordeaux, Médoc, St. Julien

    Served blind:
Color: Bricked ruby with a tawny rim and clear meniscus.
Smell: Scents of earth, black tea, molasses, dried blackberries, with a whisper of pyrazines and well-worn leather.
Taste: Dried cherry, dehydrated wild-strawberry, dust-covered-seasoned wood floors, black tea.
Overall: Light-medium body, (resolved) med- tannin, med- acidity, and just a lovely old wine. This had excellent provenance and storage conditions. Such a privilege to get to taste this piece of history.

Flight 5 - Blind #5 - Doug (1 Note)

  • 1980 Chateau Musar

    Lebanon, Bekaa Valley

This was almost rosé-esque in the glass. The nose smells of a dust-covered, oil-stained cement floor with notes of kirsch, and tobacco. On the palate there's the typical notes of cherry-cough-drop, molasses, raspberry, with a lingering note of wild strawberry and mushrooms...this is just so silky-smooth. This is an excellent wine...but it's just a shadow of the last bottle we had from this vintage. This bottle was sourced and imported through the UK. Once again confirming my beliefs that the bottles that are imported by Broadbent show differently (and usually for the better in my mind).

Flight 6 - Wine #6 (1 Note)

  • 2009 Guillaume Gilles Cornas

    France, Rhône, Northern Rhône, Cornas

A deep violet-tinted ruby in the glass with a solid ruby core. Scents of smoke, beef blood, white pepper, dark chocolate, and blueberry roll effortlessly out of the glass. On the palate this is firm, structured, and showing flavors of charred beef, blueberry, blackberry, all under a veil of this rustic & earth-driven from that's clean and framed by firm tannin and good acidity. A producer that deserves more attention...Outstanding!

Flight 7 - Beer palate cleanser - Doug (1 Note)

  • 2016 Cantillon Brewery Iris

    Belgium, Brussels

This was more golden in hue than I remember in past bottles that I've had. The nose is full of musk, earth, and a hint of tart yellow apples. On the palate notes of tart-white grapefruit, green banana, lemon, chalk, and aspirin were most notable to me. I love this beer...but it is not for everyone. I feel so very fortunate to have gotten to drink this again. It's a joy every time. Outstanding!!

Flight 8 - Château-Chalon with walnuts & comte - Ray (1 Note)

  • 1996 Auguste Pirou Château-Chalon

    France, Jura, Château-Chalon

This looked slightly cloudy in the glass like rust-inflected honey. Scents of oxidation, honey and copper were the only things I picked up. On the palate this is light as air, taught, and elegant as delicate notes of chamomile, honey, and citrus rind linger on the palate. Outstanding...and I found this very much reminding me of a well-known producer's Savagnin. A real treat for me as I've never had a Château-Chalon before.
